Title: Castle combe saturday
Post by: Ernie on 18 April 2007, 23:27:52
Of to combe on saturday with my track toy with the 2ltr 16v in it now.

Cant wait to take it out as had alot of work done to it over the last few months and want to see how it goes.

Last year i killed the 1.6 gte lump that was in it (100 bhp) chassing a scooby around combe. This year i hope to wipe the floor with it.(tuned/camed/chipped/headwork 2ltr 16v 171 bhp).

All this in a nova thats only around the 700 kg mark.

Wish me luck.

 The Stick.

Yes its good fun, Years ago i had a Mk1 Escort that had a 1100cc engine in at first until i put a 1600 out of a cortina, Left the car as standard, complete with the old drum brakes. 0 to 80 in a flash screaming in top gear as i left the box and diff in also. Couldnt stop the damn thing though, Remember towing another escort  and pulling away from this geezer in his Jag, I can still see the look on his face.  ;D And my brothers face in the escort behind.

At lease you use it in the wet. Not like some people that have a car just to sit in the garage and cost money.
Looks good mate are you going on saturday ?

If so come say hello.

Fraid I wont be there mate, sold the mx6 last year to get something more "kiddy" friendly.

That day was my 1st trackday and it was scary to say the least! The standing water on the main straight gave you wheelspin at 100mph as you approach the right hander into the dip. As for braking, that was a lottery. I managed to keep an Evo 5 behind me for 15 minutes til a latecomer in an Impreza decided to re-arrange his car and the barriers at the 2nd chicane. To be honest, I was glad to come off at that point as me and another MX6 owner where having a ding dong and I had the red mist and started to take chances. Not a good idea when you have to drive home later!

I enjoyed Castle Coombe 10 times more than Silverstone, despite lapping the full GP circuit. The track is so big at Silverstone that theres no concept of speed. At 130+ down the Hanger straight there is nothing to tell you when to brake other than skid marks on the track. I decided to have 3 laps then go back to the pits. Give me a twisty track like CC, Oulton Park or Knockhill any day.

Once i'm married in 4 weeks time and the work improves for me I might see if another mx6 is possible as a toy but at the moment my life has other priorities.

She did get driven hard tho, as you can see

Dont think she would touch the Nova round a track tho, that looks an impressive setup you have there.

Engine wasnt cold, it was the annoying indiglow dial kit that restricted the needles on the fuel and temp guages. Took them off eventually because I always had a 1/4 of a tank of petrol with them on and never knew if I was going to run out.

In serch of some as we speak.
So far only found this 1.

Keep you posted and yes it did go back out and kick as on a honda s200 after i let him come pass then it went to slow so overtook it again.

Of the rev counter at 7k in third gear and was seeing 100mph wile there into the esses cant be bad but very scary in a car youve just bodget together with some gaffer tape and cable ties in the pits.
Worked a dream tho.

I had better luck than my mate.

The vid was from my mates 2.1 that blew a hole in the block.

Mine broke down with some teething probs but went like a sculded cat on the next trip out and very happy.

As for the van it got my car up to at lease 40mph on the way back.

:'( what a shame. Thats a sweet sound track from the nova. N/A track cars sound sooooo much better than something with boost. On track days you can certainly tell who has borrowed daddys car for the day and who is a "proper" driver.

Heres a video of my friends trackday mx6 at Mondello Park, Ireland.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6Z5GqaV1yc

Despite it having a n/a 2.5 v6 and over 200 bhp it doesnt sound like its got half as much grunt as the Nova.

Hope its not an expensive fix and is back in action soon.

not really, if you intend on using it on the road then you need the usual things like lights, plates, seatbelts etc.

Piers has stripped 300kg from his MX6 to get it to 990kg. This was done by removing seats, ALL trim, dash, spare wheel, carpets, lightweight exhaust manifolds and system, air con system removed, added lightweight race battery and roll cage, strut braces, race suspension with adjustable camber and rideheight.

And he uses it on the road.

This will give you some ideas

Also judging by my 2y/o boy who is going total nuts watching it... he loves it too!

Sounds greeaaaaattttt!

The footage is from 2 of my friends cars.

My camera played up but it is the first time i used it.

Plus i spent more time repairng my car and they can do the track so much better.

Just whatching it is nothing compared to sitting in there and seeing the face.s of people in so called sports cars.

Thanks for your coments.

The sports cars are nowhere near their limit -  but the small hatches are, watching that you could guess that having to drive home would make you drive just that bit slower than you would otherwise, and to be honest I wouldn't go flat out until I was used to it.

But then I did beat a Cosworth Sierra with a 600cc bike on a twisty A road about 18 years ago!

That is the point, you will drive closer to the edge as your car cost a lot less, and you can get it home on the trailer.

It is also a purpose built track car for fun.

Hence all the quick road cars being driven at not full potential

I suspect thats not the case Martin as the Nova is a very light car.....but, being narrow it tends to roll more (do you only have standard roll bars on that one?).....it looks to me like the bigger cars are also on the limit to (look at the tyres).....there extra weight is working against them....

The Nova is actualy a very good choice for this sort of thing because:

a) Engine upgrades are easy, 2.0 Turbos drop in nicely as do the red tops...
b) There cheap
c) There light
d) There actualy pretty dam strong and require little work to take the extra power...

Surprised about the strength - knew they weigh less than a gnats fart. I have driven a few (1.0 1.2 1.3) but never thought of them as a suitable base for a  performance car.

Mine has a role cage/strut brace and seam weilding done around the engine bay and front end on the car.
The back end should be getting done over next christmas time.
I drove it last year with the 1.6 GTE lump in it but it was a bit twitchy.
Since then i have had the weilding done cage and strut brace fitted and the 2ltr xe and is like a differant car.
Cant wait to take it back out again.

You have to mod the chassi rail here.

I used a heat gun and a big hammer.
And do some stitch weilding in these place's.
