Title: Car insurance optional extras
Post by: Nickbat on 15 September 2010, 11:14:32
Currently doing the rounds as my current policy is about to expire.

A number of optional extras exist. Which are worth paying extra for? Do I need to pay extra for a courtesy car, or could I manage without in the event of a repair? Is Motor Legal Protection worthwhile (of course it is if you need it, but how many of us have used it?). Personally, Protected NCB is the most important extra for me.

Which extras are important to you?

First three for me. Roadside assistance I prefer with AA or RAC and driving abroad is something I only do once in a blue moon.

None of the options I choose seem to add much to the cost of the policy anyway. But I've been driving for so long that they usually have to give me money.

If you have an accident that isn't even your fault, your insurance company wont deal with it unless you have MLP.

Worth paying for...

Protected No Claims

Usually go for this but declare an accident and they hike the premium anyway (my fault or not!) so unsure if it's worthwhile any more.

Legal Protection

Has been handy for chasing uninsured scrotes in the past.

Driving Abroad

Would expect this to be included at no cost, TBH.

Not worth it:

Courtesy Car

If it's my fault it's my problem. If it's 3rd parties fault I'll claim against them for a hire car using my Legal Protection. Don't see why I should pay for the privilege!

Roadside Assistance

Not bothered really. The cover that comes with insurance policies is pretty basic anyway.

I've deleted the poll itself as, in hindsight, it's pretty pointless.

Some good points being made here though!

I'm now minded to go for Protected NCD and MLP. :y

Thanks for the input guys!

Just renewed with MLP and protected NCD. Decided to add Courtesy Car as it was only £15. Total came out at £353.80 (LV Insurance), which is a big saving over Aviva's renewal quote of £438.27!  :y

Thanks to the meerkats.  ;) :y

I never take out MLP as I have free cover all in with my union subs.
I've never had to use them for this purpose just personal a accident but work mate have used them for motor accident claims.
