Title: Pope Protestors... Huh?
Post by: 24_Valve on 18 September 2010, 19:34:43
Pope Protest Huh?

So... the Pope arrives in UK on a state visit for the first time in 29 years & there are large
groups of people protesting against him... Who are these fools? If they are non-catholic why
on earth does church dogma, canon or doctrine concern them? Is anyone forcing them to stop
using condoms? forcing them to have a baby? forcing them to be a heterosexual? can't see it
myself... unless they are a practicing Catholic they don't have to adhere church teachings,
obviously  :-X

Then they say the Pope is killing people in the 3rd world because of
church teaching on contraception. Last time I looked there were 12 million African children being schooled
by the Catholic church & hundreds of Catholic missionary priests sacrificing everything & risking their
lives to provide clean water... Are these protestors suggesting it's the responsibility of
the Catholic church to also distribute condoms? Would they expect Hindus to feed starving people
with beef? Why aren't they doing something themselves, instead of whinging and whining? They
want women priests yet seems to overlook the fact that women become Nuns... Men can’t become Nuns, do they call for men to become Nuns... course not, there just fools that don't understand anything.

As regards the sex abuse scandal... we know these terrible things can happen in any large
institution, there will always be sick twisted individuals that slip through the net and of
course bring shame on the very institution that stands against such abhorrent acts of abuse.
The Pope speaks out against these terrible crimes unlike many other religious leaders who
scarcely broach the subject? Is it not happening anywhere within their organisation? Has not
a single minister in the world from any other religious organisation done such terrible
Things? Hmmmm… We certainly don't here much about it... that’s what I would call a cover up!

The Pope has apologised on behalf of the whole of the Catholic church for the crimes of
others & calls for us to pray for the victims... what do these protestors want him to do?
apologise for something he hasn't done? Why don't they put their banners down & go have a
drink with Peter Tatchell. I think it's disgusting that they want to disrupt a peaceful
prayer vigil for thousands of people including Jimmy Mizzens mum & dad.

Where are these protestors when Islamist preachers take to the streets of London? Muslim women have no
chance of becoming an Imam 'cos there not even allowed to worship with men! As for
homosexuality, I don't think to many Muslims are going to publicly announce that they're
gay... If a Catholic say's they are homosexual, other Catholics won't attack them. Elsewhere in the world people are being stoned to death under sharia law & we have idiots protesting against the Pope.. how

stupid are they... rant over  ;)

I could respond (in the negative) to the majority of your points 24 but this subject has caused some difficulty here recently so I'll not bother.

I don't really think there's any way a measured debate could emerge from such an emotive matter. :(

Okay looking at the pic of the very confused Miss Chakrabarti it's unlikely we'll agree on much...  :)

Obviously don't agree but at least you have your own opinion and I doubt very much that you'll be in hyde park protesting... it's a pity that others who don't recognise Papal authority want to sabotage it :y

BTW lizzie I don't suppose any great fan of the reformation is going to be interested in the subject matter  :P :P :P :P :P

What has she got to do with it 24?

Although I don't wish to speak for Lizzie, it seems that this was originally posted on the General Car chat section. (presently 9 topics from the top)

24_V, it is an inherent human right to adhere to one's own moral and spiritual values. From your post (and the fact that you posted in the wrong section is neither here nor there - a purely administrative manner), it is clear that you feel those values to be under threat by a vociferous rabble. To an extent, of course, you are right. The mere mention of Peter Thatchell would normally prompt a knee-jerk reaction to support you. ;)

However, it is important to note that the intensely personal nature of any spiritualism may cause, in debate, great personal anguish. It is because of this fact, exemplified by a preceding thread that caused discomfort to many, that it is probably a subject which should not be raised here.

There will be some who may support your views with zeal, whilst others will seek to destroy them. Either way, little but bitterness will result.

In my humble opinion, that is.  :y

PS Henry VIII descendant.  ;) ;D ;D ;D

apologies in advance to Ms Zoom... looks like I should have gone to spec savers  ;D hadn't even realised it'd been moved 'cos I was trying to post in discussion area to start with  :y Zulu77 as for the Chakrabarti comment, no offence intended just guessing that our views would be worlds apart because Shami opposes any form of Christiandom or shared Christian heritage of both anglican & catholic brits.

Nickbat, point taken... honestly didn't know there'd been a previous thread and don't want to cause anguish.  I'll leave it there :y P.S. MQoScots descendant  ;) ;D

That's OK 24 none taken :y :)

The use of Shami Chakrabarti as an avatar was for purposes other than endorsement of her political/social stance.

Hardly surprising. How can you have world socialism, when pesky religion is competing for loyalty?*

*See former Eastern Bloc states for compelling examples of failure, I am pleased to say.

Too right, she just says the opposite to everyone else, in a bid to further her own interests and get a round of applause on question time.

Thanks 24V for your later apology :y :y  THanks Zulu for pointing his error out! :y :y

As for that statement you cannot possibly know if I am in favour or against your comments ::) ::)

I posted repeated  :-X :-X :-X :-X because any open debate on this matter  on the OOF is going to become highly charged and emotional, and I just do not believe nowadays (there was a day when I felt differently!!) that the OOF and its members can take it or want it.

I personally just want a peaceful debate, and this subject will never produce that on the OOF, or I suspect elsewhere! :) :)

Too many 'locked' topics. People should just try and hold a reasoned discussion.
Religion should not be discussed on open forum, it's a recipe for a free-for-all and nobody ends up in a winning position. Politics is nearly as bad, but that doesn't go as deep.

common misconception; looking at it from the outside in a lot of people oppose this particular pope as opposed to the idea of a pope visiting (or the wider argument about catholocism and its teachings), and others simply cant work out why the taxpayer is picking up the majority of the bill.

anyway, like you say, topic flogged to death (ooh  how topical).  ;D

There is a difference between opinion & bigotry but unfortunately too many cannot distinguish between the two :(

I think you'll find that the tax payer picks up the bill for any State visit whether they are a religious figure or not? May be wrong but thought Vatican City was a Sovereign State?  ;) Anyway the RC church are picking up much of the bill on this one  :y

As for the "flogged to death" quip, you'd have to have to be a very sick individual to think that's funny. Even if you see Jesus as an ordinary man, why would it be funny for any person to be flogged? Having been a paramedic in London for 15 years I've seen people stabbed, burned, glassed etc. They're not my God but it'd never crossed my mind that it's funny?
