Title: Caravan Towing Dare I Ask ?
Post by: boughtonthecheap on 24 September 2010, 15:47:57
Well it does have a towbar, my car that is...anyone towed a caravan with their car (go on admit it, I know your out there) ? I have a smallish one (caravan) & as I work strange hours I can some times find myself driving about mid week with 'no particular place to go' so I sometimes decide to take off for a couple nights camping, I love it & don't care about the weather either, so will my trusty new car (well its not that new) get me, caravan & possibly a few hangers on where we want to go ? saying that it won't be that far  ;D we don't want to waste too much time arsing about on the road, & one field looks pretty much the same as another (green)...So does the Omega tow well enough.......experiences please

Tow with mine all the time....great towcar. as long as your 'van is max 18ft or so, should be fine. you might need a stabilizer , but I haven't used one, and its totally stable.
Go for it!!

Hey that's fantastic OOOOhh I can't wait, caravan is only about 16ft total length, & the car should pull up the odd hill ok, last vehicle I used was a Delica & it hated hills even speed humps with a caravan in tow...it was supposed to be a Turbo Diesel' it was great for putting camping stuff into & comfy drive but it let me down coming back from Ravenglass (what a scary place that was, it was so creepy at night, venturing on a wind & rain swept dark night I took my chances to find a local pub on foot)...
Well its all encouraging news am so happy with my new vehicle whoopeee

I've towed with 2 Omega's now .. the old 2.5 and this one. Both excellent towcars for both power and braking, also, if the elite versions (both of mine) the self levelling suspension makes the whole rig nice and flat and stable.

I have towed throughout France with both, including down to Millau a couple of years back, (picture link in my signature) and 1400 miles this August (picture below as we are about to leave).

and I don't tow a small 'van .. 1600 Kgs ..  :)

Not a problem using an Omega as a towcar.. excellent choice   :y :y :y

Entwood thanks for the photo post, my omega is also the 2.5 elite, my caravan's a lot crapper tho...but hey its dry, warm & has the added bonus of an actual working fridge....I was interested to read you also drove over to France, so I could even use the car for a European road trip ...I've always wanted to drive over to Italy I have a small place fairly remote in Abruzzo, I've never driven it there yet, Olive Picking anyone?

I think the Omega looks smart used as a towing machine for caravans, how wonderful

This is what the old Blue 2.5 looked like when ready to go to France .. different 'van, same roof rails, same bikes I think..... still around 1600 Kgs  :)

hello,

I've towed for the past ten years with Omegas a 2.5 auto and a 3.0 auto-both estates. Very stable platform when towing. I also have a Range Rover 4.6-the Omega is far more stable towing and has nearly the towing oomph of the Rangie.
Cosequently when towing I usually use the Omega.

The only downside with an Omega is it's ability to drink when towing-but a small price to pay for such an accomplished tow car.
Towed with it to France last year-absolutely perfect-climate control on all the time-the car didn't miss a beat-not bad for a 11 year old car.

The only problem I will have is what to have next when the time comes to replace it.

I remember up to around 5 years ago I would see many Omegas towing-you don't see many now.

Steve

Now if you really have to tow a caravan, it has to be like this:

On another note have been towing heavy cars with the omega for a while and can't fault it, I think it even performes better than the cherokee we used to use!!

That's why we use one of the DTi's, DTi has nearly the same torque as my 3.2 but will do over 600 motorway miles per tank or 500 motorway miles per tank with the caravan.

One day i'll get around to LPGing my 3.2, might have to wait until next summer now!   ::);D
