Well not quite, but I spent yesterday afternoon in his london flat.
It has been opened up as a museum to mark the 40th anniversary of his death.
Its quite a low key affair but very interesting all the same. His Gibson flying V is on display along with the purple hat with the feather in, his psychedelic jacket, hand written lyrics, cartoons/doodles and various other bits and pieces. There were also a lot of photos of him in the flat and videos of him doing interviews there etc.
Often wonder what he would be doing now if he had lived.

An absolutely wonderful musician, who was exciting, and played the music us teenagers wanted at the time, and still do!! 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)
I still love All Along The Watchtower, and can play all his other tracks with the same enjoyment I had then 8-) 8-).
You may have spent longer in his flat Albs than the great man did, what with being on tour and "being elsewhere on long trips" even when there, if you know what I mean..............!! :D :D :D ;)

Were you actually in his flat? I understood that the Hendrix exhibition was actually in the Georg Friedrich Händel museum next door.
The Händel Museum must have been very interesting. :)

To me, Hendrix was almost like a man from outer space or something. With little or nothing in the way of special effects he created sounds on the guitar which not only had never been heard before, but even with todays technology , have never been heard since. Even people who play his music as a tribute to him today, cant sound like he did then.
His creativity and inventiveness have never been matched, and Im sure never will be.
He was also an incredible blues player, although that isnt what he is best known for.

Yes J, the exhibition is in the actual flat. There were for example, photos beside the fireplace of him sat beside that particular fireplace etc. - if that makes sense.
Apparently the flar is normally used as office space by the Handel museum. I think there are doors from one into the other, as we didnt have to go outside to go next door to the Handel museum. It was, in effect in the same building.
The Handel museum was interesting up to a point for me, as unfortunately I dont know that much about him, although I am reasonably familiar with a few of his better known works.
Apparently Hendrix thought it to be amazing when he learned that Handel had previously lived next door.

Hendrix changed things for the better, showed how predictable and safe the Beatles and the Stones and the like had already become by the mid sixties. He raised the game. Im glad I was born in the 1970s because I would have never forgiven myself if I had lived in the sixties and missed seeing live some of the incredible music of that period. Hendrix is high on that list.
That said, the terrible thing about these early deaths of musicians is it that it saves us from the inevitable bilge that they would have inflicted upon us had they survived until a ripe old age. Might Hendrix have had his own "Frog Chorus" had he still been around?

Possibly my all time favourite Hendrix track..

I agree, some old rockstars churn out a load of crap these days just because they can, and they know that fans will buy it, I'm glad in a way that this never happened to some of the best...not glad that they died, but glad they didn't turn into mediocre caricatures of themselves

Dont know what direction Hendrix wouldve taken musically had he lived, but suspect that he could have done even more. "Pop" and "rock" bands-however good their peak years were-dont often "age" well, but guitarists dont necessarily have this problem. In the blues genre its perfectly acceptable to continue performing into your 60s and beyond for example, just as it would be in the classical genre. Buddy Guy/BB king for example. Might not offer anything "new" as such but that isnt always the point is it? Despite the pyrotechnics and undoubted ability of your Satrianis and Steve Vais, for me , as a listner and a guitar player, Hendrix is still the number one guitarist for his feel/tone and inventiveness. Remember when I got a double album of his for my birthday once and my mum later told me that theyd played it a bit first and my dad thought it was a faulty record because of all the feedback! ;DObviously didnt get as far as "little wing" !

Excellent Hendrix documentary on BBC4 now. :)
