Post by: Field Marshal Dr. Opti on 12 October 2010, 15:32:22
Some of you may remember that our TV went tits up a few weeks ago.....I've been watching a 19 inch monitor since then.

Time for a new TV....is this one any good or is it just cheap crap?

It'll only do 720p/1080i, which is why it's super cheap - 720p plasma panels are fairly old technology now.

That's not to say it'll be a bad set - Panasonic make some of the best quality consumer plasma sets money can buy.

If you're OK with not getting 'true' HD out of BluRay/HD-DVD etc then it'll be a good set, I'd say, at a decent price.

Do plasma sets not consume more energy, run hotter and weight more than the equivalent LCD set? - Irrespective, of course, of their alleged ability to handle black levels more efficiently.

If you’re buying a new screen Opti I would go for the full HD job.

They do, indeed.. but they do (at least at the top end) give you a better picture with better black levels ;)

If you're 'not fussed' however then an LED set is a better bet (expensive at large sizes, though), or if you can live with it, an LCD set.. though I'd rather stab myself in the eye, but.. each to their own  ;D

Make that 1366 x 768 and I'm with you.  Unless you know why not, you really could do with a full HD display at this point in time.

Assuming you're not going to replace it again soon that is.

Depends if you hook a PC up to it like i did, 1920 looks awesome on it, although i do need to get a graphics card man enough for the job

you can get a decent 40'' full HD LCD samsung now for about £400, far superior picture quality to the plasmas, and no screen burn or image retention problems.

the big difference I noticed was when watching sky hd and blue rays, the plasma wasnt up for the job at all. lots of image blurr and ghosting.

It does seem like yesterday's technology...I'll pay a little extra and go Full HD :-/.....So which is best LCD or plasma?.......I always think that LCD is great for picture quality as long as there is no movement.....but poor when used to watch football....athletics....etc..etc...when you come up against pixel drag... :-/ :-/

lcd's are better.. and their response times are ok for sport shows imo..

i gave up n tv lol long ago got a crap googel box in corner for ms to watch the shit daytimetv crap on

for everthing else i run a HD projector
only down side it a new lamp at a few hundred quid every 3000-4000 hours
im avagng a lamp every couple of year nd are watchingit nealy every nigh

so its only cost me about a 150 quid a year to run

and have done that for the last 10years and havent looked back

you can save a foutune on screen as agoo one is 500quid upwards

but you can get the same projection material they useoff the roll for just over  100quid

and make a frame yourself and 1 grands worth of projector now will piss all over a LCD or plasmare tv now

pluss it will make a 42inch look like a 14inch portable tv

That sonly on HDMI tunnie, the Panasonic at least using the PC input  will only manage at best 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024.

I tries mine and it looks naff using the PC on widescreen, but fitted an HDMI card and it's a whole new world now.

I went for plasma for the gaming side and dont regret it one bit.  But the next set will be an LCD or even LED now the prices are dropping.

As evey one says Opti, go for 1920 x 1080p you wont regret it.

have a look at richersounds as well.   :y

I have a LCD Panasonic and I am more than satisfied!

Excellent picture which should last, unlike Plasma thast I understand is at risk still of problems, like burning on the screen.

A possibility if a static image is left on screen for excessive periods of time.  Which i cant understand why Panasonic allow the HDMI/Channel tags to stay on whrn the screen goes blank.  :-/

Thanks guys ...very informative.......I'm minded to go the LCD full HD route on balance....Some sets are rated at 100Hz.......others at up to 600Hz......any idea what this means?

100 hz enough .. anyway human eyes cant see the difference above..unless you use a photo or a video camera..

but difference between 50 hz and 100 hz is clearly visible..

yes.. and the prices are higher with 200 hz or so on which is unnecessary imo..

if you watch  50 hz tv from 4 meters your eyes wont feel tired before some hours.. but if you watch a 50 hz monitor from 50 cm your eyes will be donald quickly which I suffered many years :-/

i'm an definite plasma advocate - i think the picture is warmer, more natural and "lusher" somehow, also i love movies and have yet to see decent contrast in all but the most expensive LCD's - they all look a bit washed out and definitely never seen the pixellation or movement trails watching sports that i see on other peoples LCDs - i don't mention it to them, but it would annoy me  :y

but its all personal preference, besides i think plasmas are getting ditched by most manufacturers as they're more expensive to make  :(

last tv i bought was nearly 2 years ago - panasonic vierra full hd - and its still beautiful to look at - never had any issues with screen burn and i play games most nights on it  8-)

mind you 2yrs on, maybe LCDs have caught up - spend £10 on what home cinema type mags - TV manufacturers update the processors a lot so 2 seemingly identical TV's  can have different performance so check carefully  :y
