47% rises for some drivers!
When I was 19, so back in the mid 90's, I insured my 1st car, a 3ish year old 1.4 Astra Merit for about £800, had quotes of up to £2000 then, I hate to imagine what it would be now!

So its because we have better lawyers...?

I had my first V8 at 19 & my insurance was quite cheap, but you could insure anything at pretty much any age back then.
The rises just mean there will be more uninsured drivers than there already is :(
£2,100 for a £700 Fiesta for a twenty year old's just taking the pee :o :o
I wouldn't like to be a young lad tryng to run a car nowadays.
I wonder what mine will be in Jan, i'm on limited miles, it's diesel (not a V6). I expect the air will be blue when they tell me >:( >:( >:( >:(

Greedy ;)

Its ridiculous what young kids have to pay, speaking to one of the young lads behind the bar in my local last night and his renewal has just gone up to 170 per month (21, 1 years ncd, clean licence) on a 1 litre polo.
Granted BB1 is a shocking postcode to live in, bit high on percentage of scammers living there but i was truly shocked :o :o
-
It is truly obnoxious when you think about it.. of course it's a nice little monopoly for the insurance underwriters (of which there are ultimately very few) -- all they have to do is quietly get together over a pint somewhere in the square mile and decide roughly what they're all going to charge and voila..
We're stuck having to pay it, assuming we want to abide by the law, that is.
Not that I'm cynical or anything.
Oh and out of interest I got a quote for the Omega - £1500, TPF&T for a 32 year old with a clean license, as a second car!
-
My quote jumped up a tidy sum this year and despite my circumstances having changed - I only drive about 5k per year now and none of it is commuting - it was not easy to get a lower price.
What really ticked me off was the increase for my parents, who are both retired, drive less than 3k a year and both have squeaky clean histories. From £230 to £350 for their motor! Soon got that chopped back to the old price when they told me about it but there was absolutely no justification for the rise.
-
the stupid thing is, the cheapest price i got was from admiral on a multi-car deal...
if i have 2 omegas, i get to pay 440 for the mv6, and 360 for the elite.
well... that keeps the elite to about the same as last year.... but it's still steep on the Mv6.
but then i remember that directline want over £750 for just the Mv6 with 11 years no claims bonus...
and large voluntary excess etc....
basically admiral are almost making it a 2 for the price of 1 exercise...

Thing is, back when I was insuring my first car the average claim probably cost a few hundred quid.
These days, even the most superficial bodywork repair is going to cost an insurer the best part of £1K. Then, of course, there are bound to be a couple of people with "whiplash" who would have just accepted it as a card life has dealt them in the past. Now they expect a couple of grand's worth of compensation each.
The insurance industry are far from saints, don't get me wrong, but to an extent, we reap what we sow. :-/
The average new driver is probably going to make a couple of such claims in their first few years of driving so it's not hard to see why the premiums are high.

Still stings a bit when you've never made a single claim, though.. (touching wood, etc!) Even when the car(s) have been broken into I've not bothered claiming as the excess was more than the damage ::)
-
The Spanish insurance system is interesting. You insure the car not the driver.
Standard policies exclude drivers UNDER 25. In practice what happens is that under 25 drive on parents poilicies and if there is a bump "the dad was driving".
Other policies exist for under 25's but are expensive

When I was this tender age .....I was a very naughty boy ::) ::).....no tax and no insurance.... ::) ::)....I was responsible for plenty of youthful indiscretions back then.. ;)
-
are any car manufacturers doing free insurance these days - that is how I got round my son's first car - can't recall precise details but think he drove a banger with 3rd party cover as new car registered in his name - sort of complied with insurance rules on who is main user!! This meant wespent the money on the car and not on the insurance - after 1 year he got 60% no claims - this was a Ford/Reg Vardy Scheme circa 1998
-
this is what annoyed me anyway, as highlighted by a couple of my recent threads, my insurance renewal increased to more than double what i paid last year, and not only did i gain an extra year's no claims, but i'm 29!!
i can understand increases for the 17-22 age bracket but its unreal!!
i shopped around and still got it cheaper than last year, but not by too much

Insurance too high = lots of uninsured drivers.
When I was young bike insurance was very affordable
-
at least the rozzers are doing something about uninsured drivers.
some countries have a blanket third party insurance for everyone,
if you want more you pay.
