Title: Embarrassing( & worrying) moment
Post by: Jim Bob2 on 09 May 2007, 17:41:42
Left work today in beloved omega and as usual got one of the usual muppets behind trying to touch my bumper with his (new Mini by the way). I felt the engine hesitate under power pulling away from a juction which has'nt happened before, carried on and tried to forget about it, mini still glued to my bumper.Got out of speed limit and floored it to lose the muppet, and instentaneously the car hesitated again and gave a loud pop, I immediatly looked in the mirror to see a huge brown cloud with black lumps in it envelope the mini who tried to evade but could'nt due to the size. The black lumps (I think soot) covered the front of his car. He had to put the windscrren wipers on to see properly. ::)
I laughed my head off to start with but then tried to work out what had happened.
It runs fine still, no hesitating now, no EML light. Exhaust seems a bit noisier though. I'm hopeing its just a bit of crappy Bosal exhaust come adrift inside? Hope its not the Cat :'(

what have you been feeding your car?

realising there was a mini so close to its back bumper, it may have just chosen to break wind!!

Possible the exhaust wadding starting to block it up.  If so, get it changed...

Good job the Mini's soft top wasn't down...

He would have had a face like the old Tom and Jerry cartoons.  You know the one where Tom, after puting his head in the bucket with the lit firework in it, ends up with the black face and the white blinky eyes.    ;D   ;D   ;D

Sounds like your Meega simply had a small botty burp to clear its tubes.

Would be thinking about a cat or a check of exhaust wadding in the boxes though...   :y

Brilliant!  ;D ;D ;D

Agreed with the others, check the exhaust, I suspect centre section is breaking up.

Yes, thanks for the comments. It was like something out of a cartoon. I could'nt believe it to be honest. His car was completely engulfed. Probably scared the pants off him.
I hope it is just the exhaust.I just took it out for a thrash and it seems fine now, just a bit more noisy. So its very noisy now. :-[
I've hated it since I had it fitted 2 years ago. Bosal......I've learnt my lesson. Genuine next time.
What happens if the CATS are broke. New ones are pricey. Would a 2nd hand pair from a scrapper be an option?

A mate of mine once bought 2 minis (old style) for 50 quid.

The slightly more roadworthy of the two was an 1100 which burnt more oil than fuel. We were being tailgated by a white Rolls Royce once when I was out with him. He dropped it down into 3rd at about 50 MPH and booted it.

Rolls driver used his wipers so I'm guessing it stopped burning oil and just started chucking it out, mixed with a bit of soot for good measure ;D

It will be the back box letting go........

As for the A series engine, 'man father' always used to say they were 2 stroke.....

LOL, yes :y

If I was being kind, I would say it was a special system to ensure it always had fresh oil ;D

Isn't that the stuff they used to put in guns to hold the shot in?
Very apt ;D ;D ;D

Great story. It reminded me of one of the Carlton CDX's we had. We were going to Scarborough and we were stuck behind a guy and his huge family in a mini which had a roof rack on it with perhaps half of his house on it. Despite knowing the road there was so much traffic that it was ages before we could get by.

Select Sport Mode and away we went and boom off came the rear section of the exhaust as I pulled back in front of the guy. Fortunately it was held on by just one of the hangers. I managed to safely stop and the fellow stopped and asked if we needed any help! Ah the irony of it all.

Very interesting story. Problem is that every time you send a brown cloud flying backwards you also needs a new exhaust – so clearly not a commercially viable system and more work is needed. Once you worked-out how to send several quick salvoes of brown clouds at will, patent it!  ;D
