Terrible news Richie. Hope that the two in intensive care make it. As you say too young for anything like this to happen.

Really sorry to read of the accident.  When I was 17 I lost 3 friends in an accident. Horrible, horrible experience, not just in losing good friends but seeing their families try to cope and feeling so completely useless.

I posted my thoughts on youngsters overloading cars a month or two back. Tragically, this seems to support my view that there needs to be a major crackdown on overloading with drivers getting 3 points plus an extra point for each person carried over the car's designated capacity (shown by number of seatbelts).

Still very very sad, though, and death by fire is just too horrendous to contemplate. :'( :'(

it now turns out that one of my mates from northolt whose daughter was one of the girls who died. my niece couldnt afford to go out on the night as she was broke, would of been driving and her best friends would of been in her car instead. all if's and buts and guilt going on now. this is such a tragic accident and so many people are in a state of shock over whats happened. it is heartbreaking knowing that so many people you know are involved in such a terrible accident.  :( :(

I didn't think the shock could get any worse for you, Richie, but I guess it just has. :( :'(

Make sure your niece doesn't dwell on the "if only" aspect. There should be no feelings of guilt.

true Nick - I think inexperience in how a car handles when overloaded comes as a shock to young drivers  :(

Looking at today's news (and forgive me for using your thread, Richie), I see the following:

A man has died and seven people were injured, two seriously, in a crash between two cars in Lincolnshire.

It happened at Dunston Heath Lane, in Dunston Heath, when a Volvo S40 and a Peugeot 306 collided at about 1300 GMT.

The male passenger in the Volvo died at the scene and the female driver, who lives locally, was flown to Lincoln County Hospital with serious injuries.

Police arrested the driver of the Peugeot. Five of his passengers were hurt, one seriously.

Six in a Peugeot 306! >:(

It's time to stop this carnage due to overloading. :(

Just come across this thread whilst reading others about the car accident and thought I would just update with a few facts.
Firstly the owner of the car is called Scott.. he is 25 and only has vision from one eye... Is it legal to drive with impaired vision ???

The facts of the accident are still not clear even to the girls that were involved.. My niece was one of the lucky ones, well only in that she is still alive!! her injuries are quite sevear as in the tibia bone (i think its called) the one in your thigh.. well that broke and was sticking out of the top of her leg.  she has had metal rodes plates and pins put in and also she has shattered her ankle on the other leg.  Her very good friend Nicola who's lap she was sitting on in the back of the car behind the front passanger seat, has the same injuries and a broken arm.  They both have stitches to there heads and other places.  Thankfully neither of them have any burns.  Scott I believe has damaged an ankle.
This guy will surely go down for overloading his car.  Not saying it was his fault as each girl made their own decision to get in the car that night.
Im not sure why they were originally pulled over by the police but I do know Scott was breathalised and aloud to continue as he had passed it.  My niece ducked down in the back and therefor the police were not aware of the overload.
It was freezing that night and the wind was horrendous.. who knows something may have hit the car making the driver loose control.
The young lady in the front passenger seat was trapped and the car went on fire....
A mini bus passed stopped and got my niece out and her friend.. I heard that scott also dragged someone from the car... the car then blew up! Thank God for that Mini bus driver.. there were no other cars around.
