Title: Slagging off the Omega Autobox
Post by: Auto Addict on 22 August 2006, 22:28:14
There's a guy on the 'other side' who's really slagging off the Omega auto box.

He's got an Omega, but say's if you've ever driven Merc's or BMW's you'd know what an auto box is really like.

Why own an Omega then?

Name 'Old Cruiser'.

try to ween yourself off that other place its just full of bad feeling bud, at the end of the day you love your auto and thats all that matters if its right for you its right full stop if you own a car and just slag it off get rid of it, i know from time to time i give out about the mpg of my omega and the power i wish it had but i love it and wouldnt get rid of it except for another one or two as seems to be the fashion these days ;D all joking aside id never rule out havin an auto i just prefare the manual at the mo but theres nothing to say that i wouldnt get an auto next i guess a lot of it is that im so happy with the manual box i cant see the wood for the trees as far as going auto is concerned

The AR?5 boxes are some of the best autoboxes around, that is why BMW used them!

Now that would shut the pillock up!

The ARxx box is indeed very reliable, but a bit obsolete in today's terms. German prestige cars these days have 5 or 6 gears (not 4), and they do shift smoother (the Omega 'kicks' a bit when shifting up). Having said that, the Omega auto box is good enough for me so no complaints here!

As for Old Cruiser, well for each his own... You remember Ray, that kept moaning about how bad his omega was, and couldn't wait to get rid of it?

too right most folks dont realise / understand that the omega is also one of germanys finest. personaly i think its finest point of the meega is that it is the pinnacle of german engineering but without the idiotty badge. long live the original woolf in mutton clothes especially in chipped mv6 disguise. over 'ere were over run with wanna be yuppies in 316's not that i look down on any1's ride just the plonkers that think that a blue and white propeller on the nose means there better than every1 else

Cant complain with the auto box in mine!

Compared to others I've driven (Ford Scorpio, Mondeo TD, Volvo S40), its the smoothest out of the lot, even when booting it hard with the Silly button pressed (call it Silly as its far from Sporty!)

Worst I'd say would be the Scorpio, although to be fair the engine loom was on fire at the time I drove it!

Check out the GM powertrain website....the AR box (called a different name in the US) has been developed a lot in the last 10 years and is now available with more gears etc etc......plus they all use Dextron 6 fluid now  :o

And BMW still use them.

To be honest, the Merc boxes I have always found the worst going, they never seem to be abel to decide what gear to be in....

Well at the time I knew about my dad was still working for Richard Cound (I have a very anti BMW GB story here for another day) and I had the Carlton still. We discussed the technology swap with the 2.5 TD and the 4 speed auto.

I didn't realise they had upgraded the same box to more gears (would it fit?) and BMW were still using - but then GM boxes are among the best.

Worse autos I have driven include the Grandada and a Cavalier 3 speed

I think he just found out the offical name of the box in his megga, and thought he would show off by naming it in a thread.....

He quickly shut up when it was pointed out the same box is in  various BMW's!!!! (thanks martin)  ;)
