Doing a bit of tidying the other day and found an old diary from back in my schooldays. I had kept all the others over the years in a special shoebox, but this one had somehow escaped. Anyway, it contained the bizarre ramblings of an adolescent's crush on a girl who, it transpired, had little interest in him in "that" way. :'( ;)
Do any of you keep old diaries or letters (especially of the romantic variety)? ;)

God no.. the past is best forgotten! (Also, it would just be the same thing over and over again :D)

I have never kept a diary, but am a bugger for keeping photo's of every one.
But having spent 9 weeks in hospital at the age of 10 i got my parents to get me an autograph book and got all the doctors and nurses to sign it but a lot of my school mates when I went back to school. I still have it to this day and refuse to part with it.

I have a couple of old diary's knocking around in the loft, not sure where, one is from my time in HMS Ganges, not seen it for a few years.... ::)
Used to have a busy life as a Cub Scout Leader so used to keep a diary each year, came in handy when I got questioned by the Police during their enquires searching for the Yorkshire Ripper...Can you remember what you were doing on Thursday about 6 months ago, yes officer as I recalled my movements using the diary as an aide memoire...... :y :y :y

I should destroy them, really, but I don't feel embarrassed by them. Oddly enough, apart from the "romantic" entries, I see I wrote "Martin Luther King assassinated" on 5th April 1968 (the event happened on 4th, but that shows how fast news travelled back then!!) and on Sunday 7th April the entry was "Jim Clark No1 Lotus driver killed in Heidelburg - W Germany". So, it's an historical document, too. ;D
On second thoughts, it's probably destined for the barbie next summer.... ;) :y

Yes, it can be quite frightening at times but poignant in the overall sense to go over old writings.
I never bothered to keep a dairy (something I regret) but I would have no doubt that I too would have found reports of unrequited love on more than one page.
When I do look over some of the stuff I've written over the past 30 years or so I get quite emotional because I see words from someone who used to be me - a person full of the vitality, hope and aspiration usually found in individuals unencumbered by the sometimes bitter burden of historical experience.
For many reasons I don't go there too often but I will say - to MJB - I regret not being in a position to take things further, but some responsibilities simply can't be ignored.
