Title: There's never a good time for such things, but....
Post by: Amigo on 20 December 2010, 18:15:06
WHY NOW???? Just had the plumber in to do what we thought was a quick £110 heating repair. Had a new switch fitted a burst pipe joint re joined only to find the pump works but the frost has split the casing & bits of the boiler are in a similar sorry split state. He's not peeing up my back i've seen it for myself, & it's a proper mess. He's drained & de pressurized the system. I let the pilot light go out months ago as i have a leccy shower & boil the kettle for washing up water. This is my first owned property & the boiler has been unchecked for over 8 years & is old although alot of the pipework was new back then & still good, & i've replaced the hot water tank in the loft. Can't do much about it till the new year. We can keep warm downstairs with the leccy coal effect jobbie & a gas ring on in the kitchen & various plug ins. One of lodger Steves squeezes is lending us a calor gas heater with a new bottle (cheers Angie) so we''ll be ok but £1500 is a bitter pill to swallow this time of year.
A lesson has been learned though. Once done i'll take out a monthly plan to cover inspections, servicing & repairs. I'd have to use some pretty colouful language to say how i feel right now, suffice to say i'm a tad disgruntled!!! >:(

Sorry to hear of your misfortune Guy :'( :'(

These things do always seem to happen at the worst time, as a friend of mine has just found out!

She was away at her fathers, and a neighbour phoned to say water was coming out under her front door.  She went back to her bungalow to find the floors like a lake, and all ceilings down, with all electrical and soft furnishing completely ruined!  A joint to a shower in her loft had apparently come apart! :'( :'( :'( :'(

Hope all is put right soon for you Guy :) :)

not nice remember to put antifreeze in and change it every 2-4years, I just put the cheap stuff in dose the job for heating, looked around and there are a few place that will replace the hole systerm for £700, that might be an option for you.

Bab luck Guy.

A new boiler will hit you about a grand fitted at a guess.

I should add, the service contracts are over priced and a good annual service is much cheaper (you could always pay the same amount into an account every month just in case).

But, get them to fit a frost stat, your damage is due to freezing, that way it will fire the boiler up if it gets to cold and stop the freezing occuring.

He said he'd make up a detailed quote but i'll shop around first. Just worried that taking a cheaper quote could be a cowboy job? Rather pay a little more to have it done properly.

A boiler is not an expensive bit of kit TBH. 600-700 quid for a smallish one, add a ton for consumables and a days work at say 20 quid.

What make and model do you have at the moment?

If you decide to claim on the insurance, tell them the pilot light failed & this was the cause of the freeze, also don't forget to include the cost of calling out the Plumber/Gas Engineer  :y

When you say "failed" do you mean it was on & went out on it's own?
