Title: What to do with old home PCs etc
Post by: kevinminton on 29 December 2010, 17:52:23
Got a few old home PCs and stuff - scanners, monitors etc. From ca 1998 onwards. Does anyone know of a charity, organisation - or even just someone who's interested - who I could give them to?

I have not got the time or inclination to restore them to working order.

Charities are a great idea and they would welcome them.

But it seems most wont accept them because of H&S rules and regs regards PAT testing etc.

I offered the local animal sanctuary 3 x unopened 15" IBM CRT monitors during my house move, and they couldnt accpt them because of the rules above and they actually wanted them in thier office. :-X

My old PC's are never any good. After I've ripped out the hard drive and smashed it to bits. (I had some pictures on there of me kissing Zulu at a party) :o

Computers and Laptops contain various metals, including Gold.

Most High Street Mobile Phone Shops offer a few quid for old broken/battered PC's and Laptops nowadays.  :y

I would have said your local freegle / freecycle.

normally snapped up.

My local one has one bloke who tends to take all broken / old pc's. refurbs, wipes and puts on relevent oem XP, freeoffice etc and reoffers them

Nope, they can't take it due to the cost in getting it tested.

Lets face it, a 12yr old PC (slow PII chip) is worth precisely sod all, who would pay £40 to get it safety tested?

There are charities that take old machines, wipe them and then ship out to Africa. I used to volunteer at one wayy back when I was at school.

I can vouch for MillRace IT having volunteered for them in the past.
