Title: Wanted - no go
Post by: Steveplumb on 16 January 2011, 14:50:45
Anyone know why there is the restriction on using the for sale / wanted forum to those that have 250+ posts ?

Hassle and dishonesty!.........

There`ve been a minority of bad sellers whom have spoilt it for the majority of good ones.

The admins got fed-up with dealing with the hassle and fall-out and no longer wanted the risk of OOF getting a bad trading reputation....The 250 threshold at least gives reassurance that sellers are here for the long-run and not simply registering, just to flog bits/cars etc. ;)

If you need a part you can post a wanted ad in "test" section and admin will move to relevant area

Whilst I completely understand the reasoning for the minimum post count, I'm not sure it's right. It would be very easy to get to 250 posts in no time by just  adding stupid non-relevant comments to existing posts.
Some of us sleepers have been members for years (3 1/2 in my case) and look in on the site most days to read up on what's going on, how much snow Debs has to fight through, whose boobs Skruntie is Googling today etc  ;D, but rarely comment unless we have something worth saying.(yes, I do think this is worth saying )
Maybe it should be restricted to members of minimum 6 months plus perhaps ? Before anyone asks , no , I'm not posting this because I want to sell my car and don't have enough posts   :) No offence meant to those mentioned :y

A valid point, but the software doesnt allow that unfortunately, and for selling, still doesnt offer any 'proof of character'.
The admin team so keep a close eye on forum usage, and 'spammers' tend to get their post counts docked so that method doesnt tend to work (and why we went to 250 from the easily obtainable 50, and now autolock welcome posts after a week, has virtually stamped out the spamming to sell process).

Well that all makes sense. You've obviously given it a lot of thought.Just an observation. I just sometimes look at the inane drivel some people come out with like " I'm thinking of putting a v12 twin turbo jet powered diesel train engine in my miggy" and can only think that it's something to say just to get their count up ! >:(

Excuse me BOURNE, just hold up a minute. Who the hell do you think you are in referring to our posts as "inane drivel"? I've been around since the early days as well & had hoped this would be the last time someone knocked the general chat page..as some have said in the past "I thought this was a car forum". There are 12 options on the homepage of which general chat is one. You have the other 11 all to yourself so what are you doing here with us stupid people? It's only one page, as with trash TV programmes (must admit i'm with you on that one) if you don't like it don't look. I don't go onto the technical pages & spout off there as you just have here.
Whilst looking down on the revolting peasants from your ivory tower i suggest you learn some tolerance of others & basic manners.Guy.

I don't think Bourne is saying that Gen Chat is full of inane drivel. He's saying that people come here just to sell, so increase their post count by posting 'inane drivel' just to do so & then disappear.  :y :y

Guy, I have had another look, he might be a pratt but worse have been said about members, I do not want to name individuals, as we all are, but I think he does not understand the banter of General Chat, or why we have it on a Car Forum, his loss...... :D :D :D

I suggest certain folk re-read the 'offending' comment and this time read what is written, not what you think is written !!

'..and look in on the site most days to read up on what's going on, how much snow Debs has to fight through, whose boobs Skruntie is Googling today etc '[/b]

If you still don't get it, Bourne is saying 'the adventures of Debs and Skruntie' are the sort of things he logs in to read.
It appears you have a very firm grasp of the wrong end of the stick ! ::)
(Having said that, obviously it's not the case in this instance, but if a poster does 'dis' another member then by all means 'let them have it !'  :y)

As for the 'drivel' posting, yes there is a fair bit. For example, posts like 'Saw an Omega today, was it anyone on here ?' are bad enough, but the 'Not me !' replies from members located hundreds of miles away from the area in question is typical 'postcount boosting'.
It's even more annoying when the topic heading is something vague like 'Was it you?', so one has to go into the thread to ascertain whether it's of any relevance or interest.

I certainly read Bourne's comments as constructive  :-/

I didn't read them as Bourne thinking that either Deb's snowy adventures or Mr Skrunt's 'gentlemen calendar pics' threads are drivel. In fact, I read it as that was one of the reasons that Bourne visits OOF regularly, rather than seeking Omega help  :-/

I keep rereading the post, an cannot see any intentional offensiveness in it - obviously I am reading it differently to others who can.

Bourne was asking valid questions about whether the 250 post rule is right, and if there were other ways of implementing limits.  Nothing wrong with that.

That's how I read it, too.

Now a little part of me did say "I wonder if he's talking about me when he talks about drivel" because, well, I know I can post some complete nonsense (usually with the aim of making someone laugh).. but I quickly told myself to shut up and took it as a generally positive comment that Debs has hidden followers ;)

Seems i was being a tad over protective, put 7 & 4 together & made 81! I do that sometimes however well intended. Can't blame the drink as it was a school night! I'm fully aware i post volumes of drivel & don't mind being told so.

Well I certainly seem to have inadvertently lit the blue touch paper haven’t I. let’s see if we can get this clarified without offending anybody else.
What I categorically was not saying is that generally the posts are inane drivel. Nor do I consider myself looking down from an Ivory tower at the peasants. I’m just an ordinary working bloke like everybody else. As for  tolerance of others , I like to think that I treat pretty much everyone from all walks  of life the same. Unless you happen to be a paedophile or have some other odious pastime. (I ought to make it clear here that I’m not implying that anyone on here is a kiddy fiddler in case that’s mis-interpreted as well !) Basic  manners ,well  I certainly make an effort to behave in a correct and acceptable way , but I suppose what seems correct to me may be frowned upon by others. I can live with that. By mentioning members names I seem to have upset some people. That wasn’t my intention. After re reading the post, I don’t feel I said anything disparaging or offensive. I did in fact add that no offence was meant in the original post.
All I was trying to say was that a very small minority of people ,  seem to post anything and everything   just to get their post count up. I’m not trying to make a big issue of it, it was just an observation which came up whilst talking about the minimum Post count required to place ads. That’s all.
Please re read the original post and take it the way it was intended, without malice or insult.
Finally, if Debs or Skruntie read this, please accept my sincere apologies if you found my comment in any way offensive. It was not my intention.  In the wise words of the oracles “lets all be nice for a change”

Amigo. Thanks for the apology which is fully accepted but equally unnecessary. We all have a rant occasionally which in the light of the next day seems unjustified. I'll try to be more clear next time. :y
