..... so we supposedly hate americans. we can't stand their naizely accents. or the fact they think nowhere else exists other than the states. or how their retired folk dress when they do realise there are other countries and go on holiday. or their government. or their size. their self-righteousness. or their materialism and certainly their 'american dream' as it's the most ironic thing in the world (world including 'the rest of it' besides redwing drive, little rock, arkansas)

The "hate America" culture has been largely fomented by the left -wing media. They stopped briefly when Obama became POTUS, but now that the next presidential raise looms on the horizon, they're back on track.
I have no problem with America or Americans. That does not mean I agree with everything in their culture or the country's foreign policy, but there are some who have an instinctive US-hatred, bordering on the obsessive. As you say, we share many values and we have adopted many of their products and innovations.
No need to see it as a rant. I think many of us agree with you. ;) :y

Having known Americans most of my life, visited their country, lived with Americans on a number of acassions, and loved everything about the United States of America along with their culture, no one can say anything against them whilst I am around! ;) ;)
For me my life, and the future, would be a lot sadder without the US of A, and certainly I believe our very existence (well mine and my children anyway!) would be in grave doubt without them since 1940, to date :y :y :y
I would also prefer to see the UK as an American State than us become just another State of Europe! :P :P

My current wife lived in Los Angeles as a child between 1967-71. This was a time of much civil unrest......race riots.....and gun crime were common place.
During this time the good people of America elected a Republican preident who went by the name Richard Milhous "Watergate" Nixon.....a nice chap... ::) ::)
She still retains some American friends from this time. I have always found them to be genuinely friendly and engaging.....yet also slightly gullible and easily led... :y :y

When I heard that we had a free 2 weeks all expenses paid holiday to the U.S. in 2001, I was very p1ssed off. I really didnt want to go, "its full of Americans" was my cry of complaint.
Anyway - flew Virgin Atlantic to Boston, picked up the hire car at the airport, and proceeded to drive up to New Hampshire, with a feeling of being quite underwhelmed by what lay ahead.
Within a few days I had fallen in love with the place and after a week I was dreading the end of the holiday. The hotel was lovely, the area was beautiful, the price of everything was very cheap, and the people were genuinely warm and friendly.
The service in shops/ restaurants etc. was superb. We take the p1$$ out of the Americans for saying "have a nice day", but it beats some disinterested spooty yoof, who gives the impression that they are pretty annoyed that you have interrupted their texting session by wanting to buy something - which is what we have far too much off over here.
We explored a lot of New England, a beautiful place. went to Niagra falls - which is a spectacular experience. Went across into Canada, saw the mighty St. Lawrence river, went to Montreal and then carried on up to St. Berthier - a personal pilgrimage for me, as it is where the late great Gilles Villenueve came from.
We then went down to NYC for the weekend (10th and 11th Aug. 2001) and did the whole New York thing -Went up the statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, and to the top of one of the twin towers. Also did Central park, the Dakota building ( where Lennon lived and died) and Times square at night.
I came away from the place with a completely different attitude to when I arrived. I loved much of the American way of life, and it is the one place I have visited that I could really consider emigrating to, given the chance.

We should never have let them have independence. Do you know that the cathedral in malaga is unfinished because the bishop of the day sent the funds to fight the war agin the British?
If they were still a colony they would talk proper and spell properly. They would also be more worldly and know that Africa was a continent as opposed to a country.
I have trouble naming one good thing that came out of the USA.

Nah! Everyone knows that the building of the cathedral was sub-contracted to the same chaps who have been working on Albs' kitchen. That's the real reason. ;) ;D ;D

7 American pilots even flew for us during the Battle of Britain, bless them 8-) 8-) 8-) 8-)

Yep, and they then believed they won it! ::) ::) ::) :P
Then their President, Woodrow Wilson, took it upon himself to organise the European powers, minus Germany, into the League of Nations that produced the infamous Versailles Treaty in 1919, which guaranteed World War II would take place! ::) ::) ::)
God bless, they were at the start of their American Century, and only trying to help! :D :D ;)

On so-called "American" spelling, there appears to be some confusion.
Many verbs that end in -ize can also end in -ise: both endings are correct in British English, though you should stick to one or the other within a piece of writing. For example: finalize/finalise; organize/organise; realize/realise.
Prior to WWII, the -ize was widespread and has historical precedent in our language, though the -ise ending has become more common since then. :y

what p's me off about American spelling is when it's used and the writer has no idea that they've used the 'wrong' spelling. eg here (those that don't use English as their first language are excused ;))

Who are we as a nation to condemn the Americans for their use of the language, English as we know it is extensively French based, the British rarely use it or pronounce it correctly, generally through laziness. The Welsh add an "o" to use it although most Welsh do not use or pronounce their own language any way. I get annoyed with my offspring for using Americanism's such as "my bad" when they make a mistake >:(. My own English may not be perfect but I do try to engage the brain before opening the mouth. :y

all of those langauges based on Romans which is Latin language actually..
edit: must add, however within time countries neighbouring will effect others by social relations, wars , invasions etc..
for example some Romanian words are directly used in Turkish where as some ottoman words are used in Romania..

Oh yes Mike, my natural trait is towards being a dictator! It is so much more fun than being a boring liberal democrat. You can get away with so much more in an uncomplicated way! Everyone expects you to take over the home, office, country, world................!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
She's not joking... :o.....be afraid ...be very afraid...

all of those langauges based on Romans which is Latin language actually..
edit: must add, however within time countries neighbouring will effect others by social relations, wars , invasions etc..
for example some Romanian words are directly used in Turkish where as some ottoman words are used in Romania..
Indeed Cem, and I bet many English people who hammer on about "proper English" will be horrified to learn that since the not insignificant little matter of the Norman invasion of 1066 much of our language is a mixture of French and English. i.e two examples I can always remember is Pig is English, but Pork is French, and Sheep English, Mutton, French!
Our "English" language is also based on Germanic language, that came across to these isles after the Romans left with the Anglos and Saxons. Norse language is also within "English" due to both the Vikings and the Normans, who were of Norse origin. In short our language is a bastardised version of many. ;) ;)
-
In the US the official language is English, in the UK there is no official language :o
-
What nonsense....
Neither Budweiser nor Boddingtons are even close to being drinkable.(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick029.gif)
;)
If you are talking about the proper one I think a few east Europeans will disagree.
-
what p's me off about American spelling is when it's used and the writer has no idea that they've used the 'wrong' spelling. eg here (those that don't use English as their first language are excused ;))
If you're referring to things like the -ize endings, I refer the honourable member to my post above. ;) ;D
No reference to your postat all ;) ;) ;)
If you look through variousposts here, some very recent, there's tire when it should be tyre and coincidentley we've had talk of their 'pay check' ...... :-? As a nation we must obviously watch too much American telly. My nephews have even refered to bloody dipers (sp?)

That makes you quite unique in the OOF community :D :D :D

I have to tread a little carefully here as I have fairly recently tracked down my absentee father to the US. It appears I have an American step-mother!
I think it is easy to make the mistake of taking the least attractive attributes of any country as a whole and as it enacts its foreign policy and applying them to people of that country, yet when you meet the individuals of that country they are, for the most part, friendly and welcoming (with the possible exception of the French :P).
As for the origins of the US, if they hadn't had significant assistance from the French in the War of Independence they may very well have remained part of the British Empire for a good while.

Fair comment. I have these last few days been trying to think of anything good that has come out of the USA. Nope, still can't muster anything. ;D ;D ;D
And the Spanish.

My wife. And having spent a lot of time in the USA over the last 8 years I cant wait for the day I can leave the UK and move over there :y
Oh and on the subject of beer, their mass produced stuff is just as pish as our carlsberg, heineken, etc..... most US microbreweries are producing extremely good beers that are equal to our own. I particularly like the Kona beers, unfortunately I have yet to find a supplier here.
-
Yeah, their beer is gradually improving, based on my more recent visits..
Remember, though, they're not stupid. Oh, no. ;)

Yes, it is a big country with some really stupid people! :( :( :(
I wonder if people were asked similar questions on UK streets they would fair any better? ::) ::) ::)
-
Fantastic. Of course it only features the dumb answers but it wouldn't have taken long to compile either in the USA or in Britain. Dumbed down drones fed on KFC.
Having been to the States, I too wouldn't have minded living there. The country has everything - mostly to excess! Ah those all you can eat breakfasts with endless coffee for very little money! 40 oz Cokes on the road till the next gas station.
I still can't think of any thing good that has come out of the place. Ford Mustang?

Somehow I doubt they'd do any better, Lizzie. :(

your not a lover of any form of contempary music, produced in the last 60 years ?..........it all either came from there or has been copied from what came from there. ;)

The Beatles were British, very original and kicked started a music revolution.
I would accept though that they were influenced by Buddy Holly and Elvis! ::) ::) ;)
-
They were very creative, imaginative etc. Lizzie like many other great British musicians of that era, but all rock/pop etc music originates from the U.S. Blues/gospel/country etc. are the roots from where it all stemmed. :y
If these types of American music hadnt been mixed up into what became known as rock & roll, there wouldnt have been any Beatles,or any of the other music which came after it.
