As most of you know, I've had severe back problems for a couple of months. Seemed to be much better and returned to work this week on restricted hours. Here's the dilemma...
I haven't had to do a full driving stint yet but, after my 2nd shift last night, I have sciatic pain again :'( :'(
Not as debilitating as it was but very uncomfortable. SWMBO thinks I should call in sick again tonight, I plan to go in (as it's only a 6 hour shift) but make an appointment to see the company quack again next week as there's no way I'm fit for 12 hour shifts yet. Any thoughts?

Take it slowly and talk to the quack about the pains you're getting is the best plan, Rome wasn't built in a day Paul.

I intend to... The dilemma is whether I go in tonight :-/ :-/
Don't really want to call in sick again but concerned I might do myself more damage :'(

That sounds very sensible LD :y :y :y
However make sure that during your job you do not place any unnecessary strain on your back if that is possible. If you find tonight that the pain increases, then I personally would cease work immediately and report sick. It is all too easy to make a back complaint a lot worse by pushing yourself too hard too quickly.
Take great care with yourself LD ;) ;) ;)

are you positive its sciatic pain? if yes then get your self to an accupunturist, when i had it i couldnt move as the pain was excrutiating, an hour session for the next 3 days and i was back at work!!! make sure they are a good one though, ask around to se which one gets good reports,
I was amazed they actually put needles in my wrists neck and spine and in twenty mns i could feel the pain subsiding!! :y
-
if it was fine until you drove, are you sure its not the truck seat? I can drive be a passenger in the Omega all day long without issue, 20 mins through London in a Addison Lee VW People carrier and I had back pain!
-
I would suggest doing what you suggested in the opening post, unless you wake up in more serious pain

I hear good things about these. :y
I tried an osteopath. A complete waste of time and money in my opinion. :-/ :-/ :-/
Get well soon LD... :y

Yep... I've been going through it for the last 9 weeks! Started as a "Slipped Disk" and progressed through "Lumbar Facet Syndrome" (one caused the other) with sciatic pain and all sorts. Been seeing a chiropractor for 8 weeks who is also a registered Acupuncturist and it worked wonders. Trouble is, it's Sunday and I'm due into work in 2 hours. ::)
I work 65 feet (or so) up a crane and bent over!
Just spoken to my Chiropractor (he's also a mate!) and he's suggested giving it a go but not pushing too far... He also commented that he thought I'd be off longer than I have been already from previous experience. :o

Not a truck Tunnie (as you know!), a crane ;)
Driving position is leaning forwards to stare down through your feet ;)
-
Mine is 95% back to normal.
Just a bit sore if I stand a lot.
Currentyly have some other issues which need to be sorted but I am having constant headaches and will be seeing a doctor tomorrow.
-
are you sure its sciatic and not disc trouble? a general xray set up through your gp should show any disc trouble... either ware and tear or degeneration. if its degeneration it could be caused through your job and you will be entitled to an INDUSTRIAL INJURIES payout. so well worth investigating... :y

I could not remember which way around it was, if you were in recovery now, or crane :-[ Apologies :-[
Makes sense now, try acupuncturist as a few have suggested, father T has had it few times works well i hear. :y

Sciatic is caused by a disc, a disc moves and presses on the sciatic nerve, causing pain normally down the back of the leg.
I've lost count on how many times I've slipped a disc....last one was 3 weeks ago.....thankfully after 2 weeks it went back in on its own and its fine again now.....tho having a hot as i could stand jacuzzi bath every evening for 1/2hr or so, probably helped it :y
My doctor is of the type, that just prescribes 'industrial' strength painkillers and tells you to carry as normal... :-/

Thats a toughie really.....i assume you have to climb a very tall ladder to get to the cab....thing is...if your back got worse in the cab....would you be able to descend the ladder :-/
Bit different if mine goes in my bus....i can slowly just fall out of it ;D
-
Nail on the head TD. Decided to go in, after advice from chiro, but to monitor it
-
Well... Went into work for the 6 hour shift but wasn't really comfortable... managed to see it out though :y
Rang and got an appointment with the company Quack this morning (after only being in bed 4 hours ::)) to see what he suggested as I was supposed to return to full duties as of today (next shift is Friday) and he said that I'm obviously not fit for work yet then... Signed off for another 2 weeks minimum :(

Result surely?

Result surely?
I'll swap you... You have the pain, I'll go to work :y
TBH Chris, you'd have thought so wouldn't you! Just fed up with it all! I'm not very good at lying around resting and really getting frustrated with not being able to do the simplest of tasks! Hence the stupid job requirements at the meet... Thankfully I have had a few offers from people attending to do them for me while I'm the Tea Bitch boy! ::) ::)
-
pain aint no fun, i only have tennis elbow , and while i hear many people chuckle!!, it aint no joke it makes me do jobs in ways i've never thought of before! i feel very sorry for you and your condition and i hope it only gets better, personally i think if you try to work on the injuries before your bodies recovered enough i think you do more damage than good and i think with back injuries the only person who can judge that is you

Oh don't worry, I have the pain, seems to come on more when I'm tired. Had a mare at the weekend, washing machine had a slow leak, laminate floor was defo floating. And of course that's when the my back plays up, at the worst possible times. >:(
I'd love two weeks off ATM, but like you I would get bored, probably after the first week....of sleeping! Which I don't have time for at all, so bedtime, night night. :)

I could cope when it was occasionally but fed up now... Anyway... Night night world :y :y
