Get looking. Could be cheaper than you think. Hotel21 kept the Beasties personal plate for his new estate for personal reasons that he explained to me & i fully understood & accepted so she reverted back to her S plate.
   L9 MUF was & still is a bit of fun :P & only £160 :P :P

following the Grumpy Young Persons post, I never paid for any of my numbers....

6677UP was on my first car, a Mini Traveler with wood and a floor starter.... :y

5990MF was from a Ford 100E which I got for nothing and transferred the plate to a MK1 Ford Escort Estate where it remained till I sold the car some years later for £50.. :(  iirc no retention in those days and I had got a company Van so had nowhere to put the plate... :( :(

B3 MSF a 40th Birthday Present, yes you may well be shocked, but was true, some years ago ;D ;D ;D from my Dad, something to keep in the long term.. :y :y

My Carlton Diamond had the plate L510 VAT.

My postcode is LS10, but I'm not an accountant.

My ideal number plates would be

B165HED for the van
and B16 EGG (of course) for the mega
or A11 OVA

Understood Mark. Private plates are an unnecessary indulgence, can't deny that. However i would never spend what you have to travel around Europe or live in London (which is where i'm originally from anyway) I'd rather have a house & workshop elsewhere for my Mig & classic car.
You've done very well for yourself, will progress further in life & so you should. You've worked hard & deserve it. When certain folk made jibes at you regarding parental help i stuck up for you & put them right because i know you better.

CHR 1S would do me but it's not very clever.

I suspect some of the more obvious ones might help to protect a car from straight theft otherwise it's not something I will be affording.  I think.

Is it me or have the boys in blue been cracking down on special plates? I know you can still buy the registrations, but seem to see less of the modified spacing, black screw covers in odd positions etc than perhaps a year or two back.

ps, I'm with Tunnie. We had acl 10x on an xr3 years ago, my wife's initials. Didn't give it a second thought when I chopped it in for a carlton.

Don't think I could afford mine...
C 13 GGY (Cleggy) or D 4 VID (David).

Besides they attract too much attention for a tug!

Years ago a mate of mine Colin, rang Birmingham  Licensing (COL), and requested the number COL 1 N, if he bought a new car in the August. He was told they couldn't do that because they didn't know if it would be issued. Apparently they issued the numbers in sequence and it all depended on what came out.

Cheers Guy  :y

To be honest, I would rather have had a place further out, I really miss having a garage to tinker on the 2.2, its getting a bit neglected now  :'(

Also miss just having the bike there, doing little jobs on that or taking it out. I can of course go home and do all that, its just a pain.

I chose to live in London for 3 main reasons

1) Free Commute, it costs me nothing to get to work, which is big bonus when my mortage is a considerable 4 figure sum!  :o

2) If I did loose my job, renting a flat out in London within 10/15 min walk of 6 different stations, would be fairly easy

3) If I had to change jobs, for my kind of work, it has to be London. Doubt there are many mobile content/entertainment companies in Northamptonshire.

But even if I had the cash, private places don't really appeal to me. If I had £500 to spend on car or bike outside maintenance, I would do the BMW GS off-road course in Wales  :)

my plate is purely to add my personal touch to my car

i know a private plate isnt for everyone and respect your opinion :y

i dont actually see my plate on my car as being much different to having the big alloys on my car, just something that makes it unmistakably "mine"

Iirc there is a Northern Ireland prefix MJI, which if you bought one with four numbers after it, would probably be inexpensive.
i.e. MJI 3628.
If you wanted one with fewer numbers, then it would start getting expensive. :y

I think that may have something to do with in-car ANPR systems!!  Kinda points out the reason for the regs AND gives the opportunity for a tug.

I bought a shogun a couple of years ago with the number plate ??? USF.
I sold the reg to a bloke at work called yusef for 900 quid.
The DVLA gave me the previous plate which was ??? BRY that I sold to someone else (bryan) for 300 quid.

Considering the shogun only cost me 1600 to start with, I think I did pretty well out of it.

Ooh, that's a bit deep!   ;D

As I recall the term 'private registration' is a bit of a misnomer as you don't actually buy the reg - you are given exclusive use, which is a very different fishy.

I haven't seen any of those awful scripted or messed about plates for ages either, as said above the rozzers probably got their backsides into gear about it.

Doubt whether I'd ever give good money for a plate, but if I did, it'd be for an attractive combination of numbers rather than an atempt to spell out my name / initials / allusions to sexual prowess  ::)
On the theme of numbers once 'owned' but passed on with the car - briefly owned a '61 Singer Gazelle with the plate 4400 DA.......car sold in 1983 for £260..... >:(

Yes it was. Registered in Norn Irn, Jan. 1979 - LIJ 98.
Dunno why the first owner didnt ask forLIJ 23 and then put a black fixing screw between the 2 and the 3.I bought it when it was 6 months old and it still had the same plate last time I saw it about 7 years ago. :y

Im glad to hear that Henry, it adds strength to my theory as to what became of the car.
several years ago I came across it in a garden about 10 miles from here. It must have been stood there for 10 years. It had brambles growing through the floor, the whole interior was covered in green moss and it looked as rotten as a pear.It almost brought tears to my eyes tbh.
I kept an eye on it from time to time while trying to work out how I could possibly buy it and then do a full restore into a different shell etc - which would have caused world war 3 (and probably 4 as well) ::) :-X :-X
After I while it disappeared and I desperately hoped it hadnt been scrapped. Then a few weeks later, within a coupleof miles from where it had been, I saw on the back of a trailer, what looked like a brand new (but probably newly restored) HSR bodyshell, which seemed like too much of a coincidence to me.  :)

This sounds like a dodgy identity swap to me, as you can not take a number off a car unless it has both MOT and Tax...........
Such a thing is easy on older cars and happens a lot with Mini's and Landrovers (there was a big scandal with Army LR's being stolen from Caterick and changed into a civi version) where the identity is simply sold, steal or acquire another one and change the plates, at one time you could even buy the identity plates and log book on ebay, I think they have stopped this now though... :-/

You dont have to have MOT on a vehicle to remove the number plate but it does have to have been MOT'd within the last year and it does still need to be taxed.

I know this because the MOT ran out on my Omega V6 in October but I never removed my personal plate until January as I was going to re MOT it but later changed my mind.

Further to that, you can take the plate off the car whilst its in the first year of being SORN's but, make it one day over the year and you will need to retax it before it can be moved to another vehicle or indeed, onto retention.  (thinking if you have a 13 month MOT here...)

Fiona Richmond once had PEN15 on a pink car, possibly a Mustang, and I would love to get LOU15E (for my daughter) which I saw on some crappy little car on the M4 once. I bet that is worth some proper money.

The biggest problem with the ones as above, are they really stand out if you are spotted - heaven forfend - being a naughty driver!

Now I thought it was FU 2 on a Nipple Pink Jag, bought for her by Paul Raymond?
Depends on which issue of Men Only you read, but in the picture I saw she was definitely draped over the bonnet of an E type ;D

Regarding the Landrover id post. my series3 was a 1982 X reg. so paid full road tax. However you can buy a tax free Landy id for £150 then just fit the plates. I did'nt but had i have kept "Ronnie" then yes i would've done, why not? The original deal was once a car passes 25 years old so Ronnie would've been tax excempt in 2007. He never will be now as the grabbing government moved the goalposts to 31st dec. 1972 so once again we shell out for them to recoup thier endless break ups.
WHY is our fuel so much nore expensive than the rest of Europe? No politician from any party will give a straight answer, they don't need to we already know & so do they.
I'll quite happily diddle them out of anything i can, the only difference is thier crime/incompetence is legal.

yeah i remember the PEN15 one being featured on 'old' top gear.

there was a renault 5 i used to see around hitchin about 10 years ago with the reg of BOL10X. his mother must have been very proud.
