And very well deserved indeed. I heard about the decision in a briefing note this morning. Although they are moving the repatriations to RAF Brize Norton it is upto the Police where the coutege is routed so they could still go through Wotton Bassett...sorry Royal Wotton Bassett :y
-
Well deserved in my opinion. I thought that they were closing the airfield down, and no longer be in operation due to cutbacks ? :-?

I agree it is well deserved but suspect the residents of Wotton Bassett will not really want the title.....
I remember an interview when the ceremonies were fairly new and they didn't enjoy the publicity and only showed what they considered due respect to the fallen soldiers as they passed through their town.

Correct .. repatriations cease through RAF Lyneham in September 2011 and will thence go through Brize Norton. RAF Lyneham will close as a military base in 2012.

A "survey" - no idea actually how many folks were asked - was reported to "prove" that 90% of residents did not want any "reward". There is/was concern that any "reward" would result in bus loads of tourists joining the repatriations. With any luck the timing of this reward, coinciding with the end of the repatriations through Bassett, will prevent such "tourist trade"
Whilst I, personally, think the award is "wrong" .. there are many who are justifiably proud of both what has happened and the "reward".
Regardless, I, and a few others, will be at our own "special" spot .. well away from any cameras/press/ gaupers tomorrow.

So can you put "by Royal Appointment" on the burger van now Nige? ;D ;D
Seriously, though I think the place deserves recognition for the way repatriations have been treated over the years.

cynical manipulation of genuine emotion by Cameron piggybacking on heartfelt, dignified and modest tributes in my opinion >:(
plus it costs very little and pleases the Daily Mail and Ruperts Rags :o
and yet another reason not to live there
"Royal Wootton Bassett?"
"Isn't that the place where you can't move for crowds lining the streets and protesters marching every weekend?"
"nah - Pass"
