Been up the town today looking for some 501's. They were all I used to wear way back in my youth.
What they now sell as 501's are nothing like what I remember them being then.
Part of the deal was the real "Shrink to Fit" thing where you sat in bath with them on for an hour :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D
They were really thick ,heavy denim,. almost to the point that they would almost stand up by themselves when new. :o :o
Then of course there was that unique strange sort of musty smell of a brand new pair of Levi's ;D ;D ;D
Each pair would need at least 20 washes before they had faded enough & softened up to have their own "Levi" personality ::) ::)
Don't know where they are made now,(probably China). but it used to be the good ol' USA
Seem to remember my first pair being about 4 quid ( lotta money back then ) ;D ;D ;D ;D today in town 55 quid :o :o :o :o
Anyone got any Levi memories :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Use to wear them all the time myself. Still got a Levi jacket I bought in New york in 2000.
I wanted another pair last year and used a £70 Debenhams voucher I had as a birthday present to buy a pair in my usual size. Got home, tried them on, couldnt get the top two buttons done up. ::) :-[ :'(......gave them to my son.
Was looking at them in Debenhams in Colchester yesterday. £80 a pair. :(

Buying a pair of Levi's back in 1969 was a real expensive fashion statement at £3 12s 6d, but with the Doc Martens and Ben Sherman were essential for every well dressed teenager.
I still wear Levi's but only in black these days.

They had a bit of a revival in the 80's and they were just the perfect shape to show off a shapely girl's rump. I always said that whoever invented them deserved a big gold medal ;)

I inherited all my dad's 501s ;D
Saved me a few quid!

I was paying about $20 a pair in the states in 2000 (about £15 then) I wish I could get them for that price now. I still think they are by far the best jeans money can buy but Im not going to pay £80 a pair, just cant afford it these days.

Used to wear them, they just wore out too quick, moved on to Diesel still got them 5 years on.
501's rubbish ime.

I'm a Lee 'Brooklyn' fella meself - around 30 quid a pair from Matalan!
;D ;D ;D

501's were never "shrink to fit" were they? they were always a more relaxed fit? :o

you maybe right there :-[
Maybe I should have just titled this thread "original Levi's" not 501's
I'm sure in the late 60's / early 70's there was only one type available & they were def "shrink to fit" as they had it on the big cardboard label that was attached to one of the back pockets. . Could be wrong though - it's an age thing ;D ;D ;D
I just seem to remember 501's as the original Levi jeans
I'm sure Albs will know -- see if he replies : ;D ;D

not 501's but I've worn Levis for years now, ever since I got a load of them cheap when I was in New York. They are all really comfy and last well, when ever someone I know goes to the states, I ask them to get me some.
They are about £25/30 there compared to £90+ here! >:(
