Jesus H Christ! Have you seen on the news how much, and for how long, these students will be paying off their loans. Well into their forties on the more expensive university courses. No one can tell me that this won't re-create a two tier system.

Yes. That's another valid point. IMO, it's just not value for money.

But under the new scheme the repayments will be much lower than on the old system ;) ;)
SWMBO pays about £130/month repayments on the old system, this would be under £30/month on the new scheme ;)
That said, it may go some way towards making the degree more valuable again :y :y
IMHO, people on "Proper" degrees should pay considerably less than those on the "Easy" courses

Hopefully, most potential students will think twice about spanking £30K of their own money on a degree in burger flipping so we will get back to some more sensible courses.

Hopefully, the thinking behind it is to start reversing the trend of anyone over 18 who can write their own name can go to uni and take a degree in "Take That, the early years" or something equally ludicrous.
I read something yesterday which said that the old universities (oxbridge type establishments) with high academic achievement were going to be exempted from certain red tape/helped with compliance etc. I do hope this is true. We should be aiming to shut down or remove Uni status from many establishments which currentl call themselves Universities.
The idea that over 50% of the populatuion should gain a degree is absurd and is dogma which is so hateful of what it percieves as elitism, that it doesnt care about destroying the greatest university system in the world, in order to dumb it down to the lowest common denominator in the name of opportunity and equality. Its exactly the same thing they did to secondary education when they all but abolished the Grammar schools.
Not everyone should have the opportunity to go to university, they should be serious educational establishments with extremely high standards, for the most academically able and serious minded people in the country.If those people who happen to be exceptionally bright are also poor, then the bursary system should be strengthened and extended.
Yet again its utterly criminal what the left have done to education in this country since the sixties, just like they have caused awful damage to just about every other area they have got their hands on in this country.A degree from a British University used to open doors all over the world. Now, its hardly worth the paper its written on. >:(

things not only changed in UK, but in most countries..
I have graduated from 1 of the 2 best schools in my country.. And now its no more valuable than an arse sanding paper :( :(
however I do believe that everyone must have the chance of going to university if they can pass some exams..(which is the system here ) govt schools are free here and still the best.. :y

no need, anyway they produce them harder than the sanding papers for less cost

Or just scrap the 'easy' courses altogether? Why provide something for the sake of it?
Must be honest, 3 years is a big commitment for anyone and the work in the majority of degrees is far from 'easy'.
But the worthwhileness of certain degrees is pretty low and simply getting an apprenticeship/work experience is as valuable if not more beneficial than doing a degree in the particular field/subject.

I would rather pay more than less, on average I pay about £190 per month repaying my loan. I should also repay mine within 6 years.
I really, really don't understand the big fuss, the current system works. The more you earn, the more you pay back. If you don't earn, you don't pay back.
Also when you change jobs, it takes them about 6 months to catch up and start charging you again :D
