SWMBO has signalled that a new vacuum cleaner is required in the household.
I would like one to do the carpets/boot in the car, so it must be light enough to transport to the roadside and flexible enough to reach those Omega nooks and crannies. Curiously, though, SWMBO seems to want it for house cleaning purposes. :o
So, what would you recommend? A Dyson, perchance?
Look forward to receiving your recommendations so I can ignore them and purchase the cheapest carefully weigh up the pros and cons. ;) :y

I recently had my deyson refurbished, including a replacement motor for the sum of £69. A couple of months ago, i bought my mother (91 yrs old) a new vacuum cleaner for £65. It was a lightwight bagless one similar to one available from Rob Dyas and, having used it and being able to compare it with the refurb dyson, i would heartily recommend the cheepie new one. Just the job for your omega :) :) :)
-
Swear by our "Henry" would not have anything else
only probs i have using it on the car is the need for 150 meters of extension lead to reach from the house :(
-
imho, whatever feels best in your hand.
few things I despise in vacuums....
1, brushbars that dont stop rotating when moved to upright, great for chewing things up.
3, vacuum's that suck through the hose all the time rather than only when the tools are being used.
I know Dyson's tick the box for both those, ours has been good, but not that good considering how much they are, and I dont think they last very well. That said, Im starting to keep an eye out for a replacement for our aging DC07 Animal, and Im not seeing many / any non-dysons that fit the bill, but am reluctant to go dyson again.
-
Mrs Opti uses an elderly Dyson DC 01. It still seems to work well enough. We don't bother with the filter's any more. They are expensive and cut down on "the suck".... :y
-
Wickes own brand wet & dry 'henry-alike' - £60 including the better wet & dry filter and it sucks like nothing else I've got (including the Dyson)
I dropped the hose on the gravel driveway and it started hoovering the gravel up! :o ;D

I have this;
http://www.miele.co.uk/vacuum-cleaners/s6/s6220catanddog-396/
Easy to use, has good suction and has been utterly reliable since purchase.

Yikes, Zulu, the cheapest Miele S 6220 I can readily see is £179! :o

Dispense the shekels Nick, Mrs Nick will love you even more for it (should she be the primary user of the machine). ;D ;D :y

;D It was quite comical..
The first job I used it for was to vacuum brick rubble out of the back of the Omega - bits of brick, bits of mortar, leaves, dust, everything went up it.. (followed by half the drive)
I got mine largely because we've been abusing a friends identical model for about 6 years now in his garage - we've used it to empty 1" of coolant from his pit (including bits of wadded up soaking wet kitchen towel), vacuum bled coolant systems with it, sucked up oil, the occasional bolt, nut, washer, hoovered the place (occasionally) and it's never missed a beat - not bad for a £49 vacuum!
-
We have a Dyson DCO3 which is supposedly good for dust mites etc. It vacuums quite well, but practically every plastic bit that can break on it has done. It is very top heavy, and falls over easily if knocked while upright, shedding bits of plastic as it does so. Spares are horrendously expensive, (usual racket like printer inks) so I would not get another Dyson. :y
-
I cant stand Dysons, they are overrated, badly made and so noisy it is advisable to wear ear defenders when using one. Give me a Henry anytime :y
-
get the mrs a dustpan and brush and with the money you save go to the pub :y

I have no complaints with our Henry :)
I know someone who has a Dyson and although I have never used it he said it's not brilliant!
-
I have to say that the Henry gets consistently good reviews on the sites I have visited. Additionally, one reviewer said that they are made in England. Don't know if that is the case, but if so it would be a rarity these days. ;) :y

Once had a door-to-door salesman round trying to sell me a Kirby. Poor chap insisted on demonstrating it all round the house. I was mightily impressed, but then he told me the price...couldn't get rid of him quick enough!! :o :o ;) ;D

The same Vac could be purchased through industrial suppliers under the name of Cimex, cost about 1/3 of of the price, this was in the early eighties.... :D :D :D

They certainly are, iirc in Dorset, but could be wrong on the place.... I used to repair their range and then used to sell them for a national company. They actually offered my a Job in about 1984, they travelled to interview me over Dinner....someone spotted the even and rang my boss, got hauled into the office the following morning first thing, often wonder what life might have been like if I had replied differently, I stayed with the distributor rather than move on to the manufacturer..... :D :D :D

I would strongly reccomend SEBO. Not flash or fancy, but brilliant vacuum cleaners. :y

Henry hoovers are good, used one when car valeting.
Numatic brand for wet/dry upholstry work.
used the Dyson DC01 DC04 and DC07 Animai each one far better than the earlier models. Still using DC07 fault free and must be heading up for 7 years old now, cant fault it.
Have also been rather impressed with a Bosch upright I once tried.
Plus was impressed the aSamsung Reurb cylinder Vac I bought off ebay for GF. Took his work that many of the vacs may simply have been damaged boxes, this was one of them, absouploutly brand fire new, all still wrapped in plastic and never even switched on, all tools inc, just no box, 25% cody of retail. :y
-
the old Dyson was good for pet hairs, when it broke we got this super massively powerful Panasonic black thing - looked the dogs doo dahs but blew up in a week (took it back to Comet and said smoke was pouring out it, of course the guy switched it on to see and filled the store with black smoke and a strong burning smell - quickly got a refund on the busy saturday morning ;D) went back to another Dyson - does the trick :y
although i do have a soft spot for the old Hoover with the big headlight my mum had for about 30yrs :y
-
Having used many, many, many types of vacuum cleaners in my trade life as a decorator, I have to say that when I open the cupboard and there stands a Sebo, my eyes light up and I go into orgasmic convulsions ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The best ;)
-
Had two Dysons, bit fragile, so would recommend a Henry.
-
Get a Henry,no competition, dyson are rubbish overpriced ,see more broken bits of dysons under peoples stair cupboards than anything else, there no better than totty toys.
-
I have this http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cvac20p-wet-dry-vacuum-cleaner
bloomin excellent at sucking up the kids toys :D ;D
very good in the car as well and good for water to, handy if your scuttle is filled up :y
-
Dyson are not bad, ours lasted several years until the motor started arcing across, brushes worn out. A replacement motor was about £20, and it works fine.

-
Our Hoover is working well again now, after I cleaned the filters out, with the help of our Henry...... :y :y
-
A quick application of the compressor usually sorts her dyson out.
-
unbelievable!
a thread dedicated to the humble cleaner and not a squeak from the fairer sex. ::)
-
we had a Dyson but Henry beats it hands down
-
Well, the Henry seems to be getting a good press on here! :y
Perhaps I should do a Daz and get a pink Hetty for SWMBO. :-X ;) :D

These have held their price..
In the early 80's an NV250, the industrial metal Henry, which we have, was £99.99 retail and the domestic, plastic Henry was £79.99 retail.... :) We used to buy them at 40% discount plus a further 15%, doubt dealers get that margin nowadays.... ::) ::) ::)
To be honest though they are not much use in the house if you have a pet, unless you have a turbo head.. :) :)

We've got a Henry-best cleaner yet!
-
Most cleaning firms use Henry's so that should suggest Henrys are best.
Mind you most cleaning firms ive come across are crap.
But i'd still buy a Henry every time (got two actually) one in the garage and one in the house.
