Title: HMS Invincable - Turkey
Post by: Lizzie_Zoom on 24 March 2011, 14:03:44
Yes, she left today on her way to a "Turkish recycling yard" according to our local news.

So Cem, if you want a cheap well used light aircraft carrier now's your chance! :D :D :D :D ;)

We can supply the Harrier aircraft as well if you want them.  How's that for a big boys toy?! :D :D :D :y

For us a new age is beginning, without any carriers or sea bourne planes (fixed wing that is).  Oh well not long to wait for an enormous one or two 8-) 8-) 8-) :) :)

Hope we got a good price for it. Suspect we didn't.

Maybe one good thing about the latest war we have got into is that we may just find we don't need all the boys toys(and that is all they are) that we have. Just think of all the savings on no new aircraft carrier etc.

Indeed Varche, and I am sure certain government ministers will think even further about that proposed expenditure.  It has been proved again that you can fight a distant war using air power based all over the place without very expensive and, as I have repeatedly stated, very venerable surface hulks in the form of carriers.

This war has also proved another theory of mine, that we are now in an age of the submarine in the full scale, as predicted years ago by the "experts" of the time.

Our Vanguard, and growing fleet of Astute submarines, can in relative safely launch the killer blow to an enemy. ;) ;)

Yes Joff, technology marches on! :P :P :D :D :D ;)

My father joined the then brand new "County" class Guided Missile Destroyer D20, HMS Fife, in 1966.  The most modern ship ever seen by then, or certainly for my father of 26 years service.  He quickly left moaning about the loss of the old navy, "too much James Bond trickery", no large guns and "no bloodyportholes"...........!! ;D ;D ;D ;D  Poor old sod! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Now HMS Fife is long gone, like her sister ships, as obsolete now as HMS Victory!! ::) ::) :'( :'( :'(

the last time i saw illustrious was last summer whilst on a tour of the portsmouth naval yards by boat and she was in dry dock being taken apart... its a sad day when the royal navy has no aircraft carriers and is now seen as no longer a force to be reckoned with.....Britainia no longer rules the waves..... :'( :'( :'(

Just thinking back as i am now wide awake with your news. It was 9 years ago on the 25th March 2002 that lusty got back from her role in the Afgan war and the last day i went to sea on a war ship, and six months later I became a civil servant. 31 years working for the MoD and now it is looking more and more as I will be out of a job within 2 years if not sooner if Lusty is anything to go by. They say life goes on  :-/ :'( :'( :'(

I cannot agree with that Bertie.  British military power, including the naval element, is still a force to be reckoned with, but in a new 21st century way.

With some key surface ships, and more importantly submarines like the Vanguard and Astute class, they can still wreak havoc anywhere across the planet.  Our Air Force can still launch attacks with a multitude of weapons to protect our interests, and the Army must never be underestimated.  In fact this country has never had a large standing Army, but now we have the admired force of true professions, highly trained, and no longer just cannon fodder.

If we want larger forces then we will have to pay for them, but judging by so many comments on the OOF and elsewhere, no one is happy in paying higher taxes, or cutting basic services, which would be an answer to gaining a far bigger military!

Some interesting figures for you; in 2011/12 Government expenditure will amount to                £702 Billion, of which

spending on Welfare and Education totals 29%
with Health expenditure accounting for     18% of that figure

Defence spending will total        £37 Billion   5% of all expenditure

In 1914, before The Great War total Government expenditure was                     £383 Million

of which Welfare and Education total amounted to 24% of that figure, with NO spending on "Health"

whilst the Defence expenditure was £79 million, no less than 21% of the Governments expenditure.

£50 million of the £79m was on the Royal Navy, which had entered an arms race with Germany since 1897.

So, if you want a large Navy we know what we must do.  Stop all displays of Socialism! ;)

Perception is a strange thing. Even AFTER all the military cuts, Britain still has the FOURTH biggest military spend in the world. What the hell do we spend it on and perhaps more importantly why for such a small nation?

I would imagine that would depend on where the theatre of battle is located. If its somewhere where you have friendly territory nearby on which to base your aircraft, fine. If not then you need carriers for them ?
I would have thought the Harriers would have been very useful in the present skirmish ?

Well BFPO radio say it was Invincible that went today and not Lusty, I hope this is true :-/ :-/ :'( :'( as Lusty was due to stay in service until 2014 when the new BIG one's come into service. They spent 40m on her last year to keep her upto date. She went to re-fit in Scotland 9 years ago when i left her.

Not selling it as it is an excellent carrier, fought in conditions other carriers struggle in.

Should be a museum ship not scrapped.

Typical we lose our VSTOL carriers and their aircraft.

Did you know that sice the second world war every British aircraft which has shot down an enemy aircraft took off from a carrier?

Korean war, Hawker Sea Fury shot down a MiG 15

Falklands war, Sea Harriers flying from HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible wrecked the Argentine air force.

I completely agree Cem, and as a history fanatic, with a insatiable interest in large machines and buildings I would love an example of everything preserved.

However the reality is that all costs fantastically large amounts of money, which is NOT in plentiful supply.  We in the UK thank goodness have a number of ships and boats preserved.  We also have many railway locomotives, coaches, wagons and the infrastructure preserved.  As for historic buildings; we have them galor, with so many major American and Japanese tourist magnets!

But it all costs money; continually huge funds of that stuff as well to maintain and present "our treasures".  I can just imagine the  public's reaction if the government stated we had to pay another 5p on a litre of fuel, or a 1p in the £1 in additional income tax to preserve this, that, and the other!!

No, it is usually done via charitable trusts which rely on the public's generosity and good will to keep historical artifacts in good order. But that "good will" is limited as not everyone by far appreciates history! :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
