Title: What a bad, bad day
Post by: TheBoy on 23 August 2006, 20:07:17
Doing the oil cooler on project car. All was going well until getting pipes back on (I'd bent out of way - never do this, its a bastard).  With a bit of advice from Marks_DTM, Tunnie and I managed to get the back one on (after several hours of trying).

You would have thought the front one would be easier. Wrong. The bolt fell in straight away, but on torqueing it up (30Nm - not that we got it anywhere near that tight) that bastard thing sheared  >:(  >:(  >:(

Fortunately, managed to get the bolt back out. We went to nick on off Tunnies project Elite, but hit problems with that so gave u - so Tunnie is going up scrappy tomorrow to strip a v6 to get some cooler bolts.

Added to that, a number of my tools let me down and broke  >:(

And I tripped over my pot of grease, and split it, causing grease to end up everywhere  >:(  >:(  >:(

Then in a fit of temper after a screwdriver fell apart in my hand, I smashed up my leadlamp  :-[  >:(  >:(

And to top it all, i just caught my hand in Tunnies car door - that rather well hurt  >:(   >:(  >:(

Everything I do and touch today turns to shit   >:(  >:(  >:(

I'm gonna have some beer and go to bed before I touch/break anything else.

A special thanks goes out to Tunnie, who came over and gave me a hand (and tolerating a minor temper trantrum), and to Marks_DTM for his invaluable advice.  Top blokes  [smiley=thumbsup.gif], and I owe you both a beer :)

Agreed, unfortunately days like that happen to us all. I've adopted the philosophy of just walking away if i get angry....That way i don't break anything on my car and i don't break my knuckles!! lol

Does sound like you were particularly unlucky though....The cooler pipes are gits, luckily mine's all back in place now!

*EDIT* Why don't you just go to Vaux and get new bolts?

Hope tomorrow pans out better than today.  We all have had days like that, just needing a beer or two, feet up for a while, hot shower and a good sleep.

Or, when getting up and having breakfast, you feel tomorrow is heading a similar path, get someone to grab a video camera (if you had it, you would drop or break it!!) and film the ensuing carnage.   ;)  Sell on the forum as an alternative to Robin Hoods excellent CD which arrived today.....   ;D

Hand in door! Oooooouch! ;D

Jamie, I can't do anything tomorrow, but if you are stuck I can get the oil cooler bolts of this MV6 and chuck them in the post on Friday for you - no charge, just glad to help out. Having said all that, new ones are probably only a couple of quid?

Thanks for the other posting. Very nice of you that.

Cheers Ronnie - its the time it takes dealer to get the parts (doubt they'll stock them - they didn't stock the oil cooler, which surprised me), likely to be Monday.

Sending tunnie to scrappy with some tools tomorrow...

Yup, got me some propper tools!  ;)

Should prove interesting, first time I would have stripped an engine down to get to the oil cooler.

The ones that didn't fall apart, or that I didn't smash up in a minor Mr Angry moment...

If it is of any consolation, I had a day like this today. Not with the meega, luckily I was not doing any work on the car today...

All kind of things went wrong today, like an expensive piece of kit that we ordered for a customer was delivered... twice, because someone at our office made a mistake and err... ordered it twice, things like that.

But the icing on the cake was when I decided I needed a rest from all this, went into Starbucks for a coffee, then needed the loo... well the men's was busy, but the disbaled was wide open, so I looked left, looked right, and went for it. As soon as I closed the door there was complete darkness, so I pulled the cord to switch on the light, only it wasn't the cord to switch on the light, it was the emergency alarm for disabled people that need assistance... So a very loud alarm went off, and a few memebers of staff apparently rushed to the door and were trying to force their way in. I opened the door, appologised briefly, and quickly walked out ignoring their surprised looks.

??  How on earth are you guys actually getting old oil cooler bolts out intact in the first place??!  I've only ever known them to come out completely stripped and porked.  In fact yours must actually have come out pretty badly weakened if it couldn't handle being torqued up.  Dont expect better luck from a car in a scrappy - could be a lot of wasted hours stripping down a motor only to end up with more knackered oil cooler bolts!

Don't understand why your new cooler didn't come with all the new bolts as mine did, but I would have thought VX could get them the very same day even if they dont stock them.

Good luck

Liam

The oil cooler kit came with rubber seals, and the nuts, but no banjo type bolts.

Fortunately, the ones from the scrappy appear to have held, as dealers were all saying Monday at earliest...

Today was a much better day :)
