Guy Martin - northern mentalist tea addict, usually seen falling off motorbikees at 200mph on the Isle of man, has recorded a series for BBC1 about restoring a narrowboat.
The first episode has just finished and it was excellent. Its a celebration of old fashioned British engineering. They built a little blast furnace to smelt iron to cast a kettle for the boat, went to Wedgewood pottery and made the mugs to drink the tea from (among his other eccentricities he drinks at least 20 cups of tea a day), the rest of the series should be well worth watching. :y
-
Sounds gripping. ;D
-
It was a decent programme... ...but it needed more than 20hp. 2000hp would have been more fun ;D
-
I wonder if a narrowboat could plane, given enough power ::)
-
His day job involves a lot more horse power. ;)

Will set up repeat later
DOCUMENTARY: The Boat That Guy Built
On: BBC 1 HD
Date: Sunday 6th March 2011 (starting in 3 days)
Time: 18:30 to 19:00 (30 minutes long)
A Cup of Tea. Episode 1.
Guy Martin starts a six week mission to renovate a neglected narrowboat with inventions from the Industrial Revolution. In this episode, he builds his own 18th-century blast furnace to cast an iron pot so he can boil some water, then learns how to throw his own traditional Wedgwood mugs so he can enjoy a perfect old-school cup of tea.
(Stereo, Repeat, Widescreen, Subtitles, 4 Star)

I thought the boat lift was a very impressive piece of engineering.
Its available on iplayer for those want to take a look. :y
-
that was one hell of a piece of engineering :y

I doubt it, the power required to get a norrowboat above hull speed would in effect make the barge sit lower and defeat the object.
I have plans in a few years for a small 2 seater boat and a miggy engine though ::)
-
Be ambitious Guffer - use two. A 6 litre v12. :y 8-) :)
.....or W12. :)
-
We've had a few 4l v8 skiboats in our time. Hmmmmm, V8.... :y
-
Be ambitious Guffer - use two. A 6 litre v12. :y 8-) :)
Size/weight/displacement is an issue, a V6 lump with a small hull area and some skegs will do the trick. I may need a nice meaty exhaust though ::)

Nah go on, get a V8 in there: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280638289333&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:GB:1123
(The programme we were originally talking about sounds interesting too - must record that :))

I feel that if planing speeds could be achieved it might just p!ss off a few people on the banks of the canal especially when struck by a mini sunami when walking along the tow path :o ;D
-
Well that was more interesting than the bloody football.
-
They were in Northwich, its funny how a good camera angle can make a dump look ok ;D
-
Guy Martin is a thoughly nice and down to earth chap, yes he does drink a lot of tea during his working day.His dad Ian runs a Scania deqlership that Guy used to work at up until quite recently. They are both as mad as each other in their quest for speed on two wheels.Ian used to race and still has a couple of classic race bikes that he uses.As Albs pointed out Guy is not normally slow with anything and that includes talking too !
-
Guy is very lucky to be alive after his huuuuge crash at the Island last year. Its quite rare to walk away from a crash like that at the IOM. ;)

He said it was like a scene from Platoon with the huge fireball :o

yes, very interesting (we had some pish about clans up here so i flicked down to one of the english bbc1's to watch it) thought they'd made a right horlicks of the iron pot but it looked amazing in the end :y
-
I was going to watch this after it recorded on Sunday.. but since my mother decided to call last night and give me a minute-by-minute account of the show, I don't think I need to now ;D
-
According to hid he might be the new Fred Dibnah.
What I want to know is how can anyone who drinks that much tea manage a lap of the IOM without stopping? Or was that the cause of the crash? A bladder full of pg tips is enough to destabilise anything.

Looked posh last time I was down that way, mind you I live in Beirut

Guy is like that all the time,he's a fast talker and knows his onions. He is all there though and is very knowledgable about engines,so much so that he collects old traction and steam engines.

Indeed, a very clever chap. Just mad as a hatter ;D

He is a well known and very fast TT racer. That in itself proves that his dogs are well and truely off the lead. :y ;D

Normal behaviour for diesel fitters in my experience. ;D ;D
-
Good to see Guy giving Wayne Rooney a plumbing apprenticeship.
Where did the shower waste water go to? Bilges?
One day all programmes will have people speaking so quickly only young people will be able to follow!

Well spotted Varche :y Especially from Espana :o ;D

I love this programme, and Guy who I find soooooo fascinating as he loves history, with British engineering at the forefront :-* :-* :-* :-* 8-) 8-)
Is it just me though that thinks Guy is a wonderful throwback to the Victorian age, with a stong dose of Fred Dibnah thrown in? :D :D :D :D :y :y :y :y
-
Just saw both episodes other day, great program. As Lissie says, young version of Fred?
-
i missed this, just caught up with the baked bean can. what a brilliant programme. a breath of fresh air on tv that. :y
-
I think I have probably missed an episode, must check iplayer. :-/
-
the bean can is the only one i have seen. bugger. :(
-
I watched the beans programme. It ammused me that in the day, they made 60/70 tins a day. Our slowest line at work is the big 92oz can line ie the big catering can, and that runs at about 30 cans a minute. :y :y :y The fastest lines run at around 950/1000 16oz cans a minute. :y

No Beanz = less fartz.
BAN THE BEANZ ! :y ;D ;D

The series should be available on iplayer,it's worth watching the previous episodes.Guy was saying he has been offered two more projects for the BBC over the next three years. It depends on the viewing figures for this series that are running at just over 4 million per week so far.

Blimey. They must be scraping the barrel for presenters. He didn't even know that cotton doesn't come from sheep! As for the Rooney lookylikey. Inept? How much salt did he put in the beans? Dumbing down TV. Shame because the basic principle was sound.

Not seen this before.....and just checked iplayer on my TV and yes it goes back to the beginning of the series. (Knew networking the TV would come in handy :y)
So as i'm not working tonight (not risking it!) I think i'll catch up on this series, with a vino and phone up for a curry :y
-
It's on...now.

Cheers scouse git, I only missed 12 minutes this time. :y

It really should be "The boat that Mave built and Guy made a mess of" ;D
Though I couldn't even paint as well as Guy, let alone Mave.
Did like the flames, though - didn't Guy catch fire on the last IOM TT? ;D

Indeed - I wasn't laughing at his accident, of course.. but it wouldn't surprise me if that was why the flames are on the boat, somehow!

Happened to be in the cinema last night (watching Sucker Punch - seriously, don't bother) and what came on in the trailers?
Yes, a film all about Guy Martin!
http://uk.imdb.com/title/tt1698010/
(OK so it's really more about the 2010 IOM TT..)
Got to be one for the bike nuts around these parts to go and watch - I know I will when it comes out on the 20th..

It's been filmed in 3D with plenty of on bike footage to give you an idea of how mad thing are.Guy Martin is being used as the main promo bloke, John McGuiness and Ian Hutchinson are in the film as well.
One of the best quotes in the film "If you want to go quicker than me round here be prepared to get wrapped round a lamp post !"
