Title: Give me back my old incandescent lightbulbs!
Post by: Nickbat on 17 April 2011, 22:57:12
Don't know how true this is, but...

"It was already widely known that CFLs released deadly mercury, but only if they broke, see here for example, or here on what to do if one breaks. Now, according to the German television news show “Markt“, which will air tomorrow evening at 8:15 pm, CFLs also emit cancer-causing fumes during their operation, principally phenol, which is highly toxic even in small amounts."

Incandescent lamps are still widely available, just not at any DIY store.

You mean I have to go on the black market to buy a light bulb?  :o

That sums up the UK in 2011!  ;) ;D

IIRC the Phenol is in the circuit boards (which is presumably released because they're exposed to heat) .. if that's the case then I imagine everything electronic in your house releases it.

Better throw out that microwave, toaster, oven, TV, phone...

(Vinyl shower curtains also release phenol for the first ~month of their life out of the packet)

Ah yes, here we go - the Phenol will be leeching from the FR-2 PCBs: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FR-2;

Not quite, your local electrical wholesaler will still stock them.

Afaik, it is gradually becoming illegal to sell them. The allowed wattage being reduced on an annual basis. :-/

The assumption is that the PCB's are made from FR4, most of the ones I have seen in these applications are paper (as its cheaper!).

Sounds like yet another no news story.

Could well be right, Mark. ;)

I started out by saying "Don't know how true this is, but..." Probably untrue, as you say...

I know, I try to avoid facts if at all possible but sometimes... ;D

FR4 is epoxy/fibreglass and I don't think releases any phenol, FR2 is " a composite material made of paper impregnated with a plasticized phenol formaldehyde resin" - so the ones you've seen are more likely FR2 (containing phenol) if they're paper? ;)

Trust me, they are a compressed paper technology (I know my PCB technology VERY well and are more likely to be FR3)  :y
