Title: PC Help
Post by: Elite Pete on 20 April 2011, 07:40:20
Morning all.

My PC has been running as slow as a very slow thing, anyway did a test on it last night and it came up with Smart Short Self Test timed out. I've been reading on the net that the Hard Drive might be furburd, is this correct and will it be cheaper to buy a new PC or have it repaired?

TIA :y

Yup, HDD failure could well be imminent. - Time to save ANY important data to CD / DVD  :y

Basically, if that hard drive was ok, is that computer fast enough for your needs?

If so, drop it round, and Ill sort.  Be under £50 for a new HDD.
If not, whats your budget for a new one?

This PC was fine, I only ever use it for the tinternet and keeping record of rental payment ect ;)

If that was a full restore from manufactures disks, then it could well be gone for good.

If not it may be lurking in the depths somewhere, providing the disk stays working long enough, ill search for it.

You can always try some programs for reverting the deleted data if the data you had was deleted.
They work although they also bring back plenty of junk.
As for repairing or buying a new one depends what is your current pc and how old it is.
Judging by what you use it for no need to buy a new one just source HDD.
Or first try to recover the data and reformat the disc completely afterwards and install everything from scratch.

Providing your HDD is still recognised at hardware level, I can get your data back if it is that important.

PS

Stop powering the drive up unnecessairly, if SMART has notified you of imminent failure then you can rest assured it is telling you the truth.
