So, the OP and BJ want Scottish independence. Were will Scotland get its money from after it becomes independent. :-/
I will ignore the BNP lite comment - apart from the fact it is stupid beyond description,I would imagine it was worded as such to start yet another argument. ::)

they must have a bit of oil and gas left... [1]
plus there's fleecing american tourists.
[1] actually, if Scotland becomes independent, we might have to invade - for the Scot's own good of course :(

SNP are way beyond seeking independence, we have devolution which will do for now, until a referendum when the times right - i always find it odd that so many down south care whether scotland is part of the UK or not - what are you worried about if we're such a drain on the economy surely England would be better off without us? ::)
full independence will happen when the tories get a majority government in westminister again, we havent voted for the tories in any great number since the 50's :o

I note that you havent attempted to answer the question, but never mind. ::)
Why have independence when the time is right ? that sounds like a cop out to me ::) If a proud nation demands the right to independence, then why not demand it now , rather than when all your ducks are nicely lined up ?
I believe the SNP promised a referundum with in the term of the last parliament ? wonder what happened ? ::)
The reason many down south care about the issue might be something to do with the fact that people like you are forever banging the drum about being anti English etc, and wanting independence " when it suits " while the whole infrastructure of the country is funded purely on grants from westminster, which have come from taxpayers within a 75 mile radius of London.
The UK outside of that zone runs at a loss, and generally speaking, the further outside that zone you are, the more subsidised you are.
Financially speaking, England would be incredibly better off without the other countries which constitute the UK, but it can be argued that it is a price worth paying. I used to believe in that argument, but im not so sure now. I believe very strongly that the UK should be governed from Westminster ( where all the money comes from) and if that isnt suitable to the other countries, then they should be granted full independence.
Everyone is having their cake and eating it these days.
I have to pay £7 for a prescription, so that those in the other 3 countries dont have to pay anything. Thats wrong, and if I lived in the UK outside of England, I think I might have trouble sleeping. I wouldnt want to be anybodys charity case, but if I were, I like to think I wouldnt have a chip on my shoulder about the source of the charity, and constantly bite the hand that is feeding me. ;)

we have devolved government, that means our elected mps get to decide how and where we spend funds, the SNP decided to use some of the health budget to allow every citizen free prescriptions (i happen to believe if you can afford it you should pay for it but hey - will of the people and all that :y) now if this makes you unhappy Albs, I'd suggest campaigning for it in England, unfortunately, as you yourself state, the further outside London you go the weaker the economy (I'll not go into the well worn reasons for whats happened to Scottish industry in the last 40yrs, but you'll guess where i put the blame - "unelected" "tory" "overlords" are just words ;) so this concentration of the workforce in the south and particularly the south east has a detrimental effect as implementing countrywide policies (like free prescriptions) would be far too expensive, you also create a magnet for immigration - why would Scotland - one of the most sparsely populated countries in Europe have a similar economy to the most densely populated country in Europe, its a bit like the "one size fits all" Eurozone it doesnt work - it cant possibly work our countries are getting more and more diverse politically, but dont bleat about decisions our government make - it makes no difference to the slice of the pie that we all contribute to, so to say you're paying for our free prescriptions is a nonsense. I could just as easily say my taxes pay for the hordes of unemployed and their sprogs in London - but as we're one nation you cant make that distinction, overall, the UK has benefitted by having four countries each individual traits and cultures joining together - its made us stronger we've fought wars together, built and lost empires together, freed the world from evil together, laugh at the same jokes, read the same books, watch the same films, play the same sports the list goes on - even tho i vote SNP now and again doesnt mean their be all and end all is full independence (besides, it wont happen without the referendum so even if 100% of Scots voted SNP wouldnt break up the union - you would still need a referendum, and I'd argue England, Wales and NI should have a say too) but dont make out we're like some unwanted houseguest complaining about the wallpaper - we all built the house :y

I know one thing - if Scotland DOES vote for independence, I'm moving there.
Good thing about my job is I can do it anywhere.

Banjax - you make many good and relevant arguments there for the retention of the status quo in this United Kingdom.
I would threfore suggest that you surely cannot in all consciencse vote for the SNP -a party which exists for the purpose of the break up of the U.K. - as your post could have been written as a party political broadcast by any ogf the parties which stands for the complete opposite of what the SNP believes. ;)

SNP has realised that if they tone down the independence talk, they scoop up a lot of lapsed labourites disillusioned with the Blair/Brown legacy, so nowadays voting SNP doesnt necessarily mean you want independence, bizarrely :y

So, they and their supporters talk the talk, but due to a lack oF gonads/commitment to their own beliefs/confidence in their own abilities etc.......have no intention of actually walking the walk ? ::)
-
I do not want to comment on actual devolution. But what happens to Faslane.
Would England move the base to England ? I cannot imagine the MOD having its nuclear sub base in what would be a foreign country.
And just to add, what about the RAF base/s.

their are far more pressing matters than splitting up the UK albs - as every party in power is finding :-?

Hitlers left wing from Tebbits perspective ;D ;D
Of course he was left wing:
"The Nazis argued that capitalism damages nations due to international finance, the economic dominance of big business, and Jewish influences within it. Adolf Hitler, both in public and in private, held strong disdain for capitalism; he accused modern capitalism of holding nations ransom in the interests of a parasitic cosmopolitan rentier class. He opposed free-market capitalism's profit-seeking impulses and desired an economy where community interests would be upheld."

Nazism (Nationalsozialismus, National Socialism; alternatively spelled Naziism[1]) was the ideology and practice of the Nazi Party and of Nazi Germany.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] It was a unique variety of fascism that involved biological racism and antisemitism.[10] Nazism presented itself as politically syncretic, incorporating policies, tactics and philosophies from right- and left-wing ideologies; in practice, Nazism was a far right form of politics.
from your link, even you Nick, can't cherry-pick historical fact, surely :o

Do you actually know what socialism is, Banjax?
Essentially, it is anti-capitalist, anti-wealth, anti-private ownership.
Philosopher Stephen Hicks writes: "The issue about how socialist the Nazis were is, in part, a judgment call about long-term principles and short-term pragmatism." Hicks argues that the Nazis claimed to be more devoted to socialism than the Soviet Bolsheviks: the Russians were preoccupied with economics while the Nazis thought socialism should control not only economics but breeding, religion and other intimate details of life.
Of course, when you think about it the whole left/right issue is not linear, but circular. Go far enough left and you meet the far right coming the other way. ;)

I think you're getting a bit confused with what Hitler deemed to be socialism and what socialism is, socialism, ideally is a world where every man and woman of whatever creed, colour or religion is treated equally. Hitlers idea of socialism extended as far as the "Aryan" race, he didn't exactly espouse equality to put it mildly.
I find this a strange argument, almost like socialism has become such a dirty word its now being reverse engineered into history to serve current right wing thinking.......very odd :o

Socialism is not defined by the terms you give. One can be a capitalist and still treat different creeds, colours & religions equally!
The definition of socialism is as follows:
1: any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods
2a: a system of society or group living in which there is no private property. b: a system or condition of society in which the means of production are owned and controlled by the state
3: a stage of society in Marxist theory transitional between capitalism and communism and distinguished by unequal distribution of goods and pay according to work done
