What was all that about, then? Apparently Tesco opened an Express store in a right hell-hole of a road and all the anarchists then start preparing to fire-bomb it. No wonder plod decided enough was enough.
Strange world. :o :o

I heard a whisper that they wanted a Waitrose instead. :y

So have we found the anarchist capital of the world...?
While supermarket chains seems to be steam rollering everything in sight, which I find .... Undesirable? It does seem ott to fire bomb the shop.

No one wants to see high streets disappear, but there are more forces than just supermarket chains at work here. Local authorities, certainly in my neck of the woods, have made it nigh on pointless to even attempt to shop locally. Parking is severely restricted and, if you are lucky enough to find a bay, its costs about 40p for 20 minutes...and the meters in Barnet are becoming payable by mobile phone only (no cash). Is it any wonder, with that sort of aggravation, that people shop out of town? As far as Tesco Express is concerned, it does tend to give you most things in one place, so the time spent parked is reduced. From what I have read about the street in question in Bristol, it seems to be mainly massage parlours and dodgy cafes. If you wanted a loaf of bread and some fruit...then forget it. Tesco met a need. :y

trouble is Tesco do think they can roll up, unfurl one of there emporiums of lowest quality junk and think everyone will pour in to give them money, maybe a wee reminder that not everyone buys into the homogenized, tasteless produce and prefers having the option of a local butcher and grocer :y
"tesco finest" range makes me laugh, so i have to pay extra to get the normal stuff? :o

I suppose I am some what spoilt where I live having to sets of local shops, one 200yds other 0.5mile away.
Now some of the small local shops are very good, but there s a a small cartel running where the bakers shops are concerned. Both bakers supplied the same horrible bread and cakes and we had little choice. We now have a Tesco express with a petrol station and a Co-Op. Both of which do bakery goods cheaper and better than the two local bakers. Thankfully I no longer have to use the local bakers.
Now within 1.5 miles we have a local butchers which has won awards for hs sausages, and his meat is second to none. We buy from ths butcher as much as we can. Problem is he is now in his 70s and patrially retired. The business has done really well over the years, but none of his kids want to caryy it on. The loss of this butcher will be sorely missed by me and many others.
I think the top and bottom of local shops is some are excellant, and some are the pits.
Tesco and the like will take over where local shops are poor. Local shops need to be very good indeed.

You reap what you sow.
RIP the small personal service shop. Long live the identical multi national. :y

From what I understand the building in question was a squat and it was the squatters who were making the petrol bombs and posing a threat to the safety of the public.
They disagree with the opening of a Tesco as they feel it will damage the local community apparantly.
So their idea of protecting the community is to burn a part of it down and put peoples lives at risk :-[ :-[
And another thing, these squatters probably have'nt got a job, have no intention of getting a job, and think that It's fine to take over a building that does'nt belong to them and live rent free while the rest of us bust our balls trying to earn a living to pay OUR rent and pay our taxes so these dirty little tramps can sit around all day in their abandoned building smoking weed and drinking their lager.
Now correct me if I am missing something here, but what right exactly do people who live their lives like this have to accuse anybody of damaging the community :-/ :-/
What exactly do they contribute to society and to their precious community...............Nothing!!!!!
They want to think themselves lucky that they live in Soft Touch Britain.
Anywhere else in the world and the police would have given them exactly what they deserve.....a bloody good hiding!!!!
Dirty smelly layabouts, I bet they don't even wash their hands after they've had a Piss!!

They should stick a CV through the door of the Tesco Express then. Based on the last one I went in they sound like they have a good chance of getting employed there. ;)

Richard North seems to have a different take on this;
As the dust begins to settle on the Bristol riot, what is coming over with crystal clarity is that this was a botched police operation, and that the police are lying about what happened.

That makes for sobering reading, Den. :(

It is indeed Nick - but it doesn't surprise me.
There are things happening in policing at the moment that will break the long established compact between the police and the public.
It’s not entirely down to any overt desire by the police to act with undue prejudice by employing confrontational tactics but is symptomatic of a response to a changing society where the political will of the government in power assumes primacy in a place where it should never be.
Chief Officers (influenced by a cynical political cadre and ACPO) have allowed this to happen without challenge, for the most part, and the end result will be more of the same behaviour from the police so obviously demonstrated over the recent past.
The police (as a body) are making rods for their own backs by allowing this unwelcome manipulation by those who have an entirely different agenda to the maintenance of the law and promotion of good order by lawful, proportionate and sensible means.
