Title: WiFi Woes
Post by: Martian on 29 May 2011, 18:03:18
Our neighbours either side seem to be suffering random issues with their wi-fi since they didn't want to listen to advice about channel spacing.

I'm not too sure what is causing the interference for them, but it wouldn't surprise me if the source of the "interference" was using 2 of these (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120729550147), in conjunction with 2 these (http://www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-outdoorantenna-24-grid-eag-2424.htm) to get an ERP of just over 150W to improve their wi-fi signal throughout the house  ;D ;D

On the plus side, the kids now get 100% signal strength on their Xbox's which means they don't get killed before they have respawned on their own screen, which means they don't give me grief over the net being "laggy"  :)

I used inSSIDer and moved mine to a channel that no neighbours were using

I didn't have that choice unfortunately as I (or rather the kids upstairs) were getting swamped because various neighbours were using the default channel for their ISP supplied routers.
It could have worked for all of us if everyone was prepared to collaborate, but 2 of the neighbours weren't interested in the easiest solution - kind of ironic that the same 2 are the ones who are getting issues because their signal is getting wiped out  ;D

I keep losing the signal on my BT homehub, is there anything I can do about it?

it depends on a number of different things
Download Inssider and see if you are getting cross interference from your neighbours. If it is still an issue without cross interference then it could be a duff router and worth contacting BT

I'll try that, ta

I wonder if a lot of wifi problems are down to modern homes being built with concrete blocks, that are cured (or something ) with aluminium spray, which is slightly conductive, so gives a faraday cage shield. In our house you can pick up the signal anywhere in the original part, but very badly/not at all in the extension.

Thats a pretty cool bit of software isn't it?

I've just noticed that 2 "public" networks have massive signals - BTFON and BTOPENZONE.

Any idea what these are?

we use the first one here and its brilliant we pick up the signal from around 100meters away so we can use the net, but we recently found that using it plugged nto a usb hub really interfered with the signal strength geting through to the computer!!! maybe they are the same?

I believe they are types of BT home sharing networks

They are indeed - I use them to OOF when on the Windows 'Phone.

I'm led to believe that it doesn't cost me anything as the WiFi access is also part of the Infinity service that I have.

Using these points also makes the data exchange faster than by just using the 'phone.

Any type of obstruction (including a human) will have a serious impact on signal strength/quality. Cheapest solution if you want to remain wireless is a range extender.

At my local yesterday enjoying the sunshine & a BBQ and I decided to do a quick sweep of what wi-fi spots were available.
Our local is only 50 yards or so "as the crow flies" from our house, but there is a hill and houses blocking the direct "line of sight" path so plenty of obstacles to kill the signal.
My access point came up in the list, and still managed a respectable -58dBm for signal strength  :o

Actually I've just had a thought.
The radiotherapy has to be somewhere around the 2.4GHz band, I wonder if I could just stick one of the antennas up my backside for 10 mins a day instead of having to drive to Guildford 5 days a week to get it nuked  ;D

Hmmm such a willingness to put things up your arse.......: careful or DLK will break from his hols and pay you a visit lol

No chance of a decent signal with a sky router, I'm sat in the living room and I have to wave the mobile phone around to get WiFi signal.  I have a d-link in the garage but can't be added switching them

Is your router the one with the detachable antenna?
If so, swapping it out for one of these (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Antenna-LM254-RP-SMA-9Dbi/dp/B003M3RTHO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1306740944&sr=8-3) will give you an ERP of around 1W instead of the paltry 200mW allowed.

Nah, no antenna which is prob why it blows!

I have an old Netgear DG834 sat here if you want that mate, 100% rock solid, and the kids never had any real issues with signal strength when it was in use.

It's a straight swap for your old Sky router once we have extracted your username/password (which isn't difficult even though Sky tried their hardest to make it so).

It's yours if you want to try it, and if it works you are welcome to keep it.

some routers can be switched to run as an extender. you plug it in via ethernet to the sky router and use the wireless on that.
see here for more info http://www.ehow.com/how_6830480_convert-range-booster-new-router.html

Kind of defeats the object of being wireless if you have to run a bit of Cat5 to it IMO.

Some silly idiot (::)) wiped out the public, local council provided, wifi for an Oxfordshire town a few years back, by moving his brother's wifi yagis (16km range if you believe the BS) so that one end wasn't on a 3m pole (that swayed, causing dropouts).

I didn't notice the public aerial was perfect line of site behind it. Opps. First we knew was when a man in a nice suit popped around ;D

Many years ago (1982) I worked part time for a company called Rainbow Communications in Tooting (SW London).
The main trade was amateur radio & CB, the "backdoor" trade was building FM transmitters that would broadcast anywhere between 88 - 108 MHz ;)

What we were doing was not illegal in itself, providing we were never caught with the transmitters in operation, but that didn't stop the regular raids visits from the DTi :) :)

Those were the days...... :'(
