Title: Runner beans
Post by: Taxi_Driver on 02 July 2011, 14:52:10
Im having a nightmare this year with my runner beans, there being eaten as fast as they can grow  >:(
I thought is was snails and slugs at first, and i did kill off quite a lot of them using slug pellets, but the beans were still getting eaten. On closer inspection early, i did find some insects ranging in size from the size of a pinhead to what looked like an orange and black ladybird.

So ive just sprayed the lot with organic insecticide (biodegrable and safe for spraying on fruit and veg crops)

Hopefully that will deter the blighters  :y

On the bright side, the carrots/spring onions/onions/spuds/corguettes/tomatoes are doing well   :)

That wouldn't be possible, my garden is guarded by holly dog... Well for 10 mins a day, the rest of the time she's asleep in the house  : ;D:)

but she is bribed with sausages....
As regards to the bugs, you have done the best thing but if you want to keep slugs away surround the plants with copper or place egg shells over the soil

steep some tomato leaves in some water overnight add a little liquid soap (so it sticks!) and spray that on them also good for aphids on the roses! i had my beans attacked this year don't really know by what but whatever it was they were flying in to have a go, but now they're fully established it's not such a problem, at the moment they are only three foot high!! but already flowering! i think i should have really changed my soil out this year (tub grown!)
