As per title......
I don't normally bother with extended warranty, basing my theory on the money spent on the warranty would go towards a new product if it goes wrong and if it doesn't go wrong I have lost nothing.
However, I did take out extra cover for five years when we purchased a new 46" Samsung LCD TV about three years ago, mainly due to the high cost of the TV. I'm glad I did, as when it was fourteen months old the LCD screen packed up. It was replaced under the Comet agreement but recently the LCD screen went again. This time they replaced the complete TV with a new LED one. As the LCD one was 'written off' this effectively terminates my extra cover contract ( even though it still had 17 months still to run ).
My question is, do I take out the extended cover again with Comet ( at a cost of almost £300 for 5 years ) or do I look for alternative cover from an independant for my new LED TV?
Apart from the cost, I have no issue with Comet as they repaired/replaced the TV promptly both times.
Opinions welcomed. :y

I'd be surprised if they can unilaterally terminate your warranty agreement before its full term, having taken five years worth of money from you.
If your new LED TV is a warranty replacement, the existing warranty should continue to run for the full five years. Or they should at least refund you pro-rata.

I rarely take extended warranties but, like you, did with the TV... Not sure if I'll have to claim but if I do I hope I have the same results as you have :y :y

Warranty was on the original set. Warranty expires if set replaced.

I initially thought this but they explained that ( like car insurance ) once the whole amount has been paid out in full, the contract has been fullfilled, therefore ending the contract. :y

Indeed. I'd be having a close look through the Ts and Cs and the circumstances in which they can terminate their contract with you. I'm sure, if nothing else, they will state that, in the event of them terminating the contract, you are entitled to a refund in compensation for the shortening of the contract.

It was their decision to give you a new TV instead of repairing the old one, presumably because it was cheaper. I don't see why you should lose your warranty as a result.

So, when the sales bod tells you that you are getting five years peace of mind, this is actually tosh.
My wife bought a washing machine not so long ago with a five year warranty, having been told that this was a guarantee that she would have a working machine for the next five years. Clearly not necessarily the case - shame we didn't get it in writing.

Interestingly, I had a free 5 year "warranty" with a product recently and have the Ts and Cs to hand. It says that if they cancel the contract they will refund pro-rata for any complete months of cover remaining unless a claim has been made. >:(
So, they'll give you repairs, new TVs, etc. but, if they get bored with that, once you have made a claim, they can walk away.
Not something I would pay money for, TBH, and certainly not £300.

TV's are getting thinner, cheaper & better. Not worth it, any decent brand TV should last at least 3 years, if it goes bang just get a new one!

The product is covered for five years and they will continue to repair it for the full five years but if parts are no longer available they can choose to replace with new ( effectively ending the contract with the original product ). In my case, the original TV was in excess of £1200, the replacement LCD screen cost them over £600 ( allegedly ). ::) When the screen went for the second time in under three years, they suspected a TV fault, so opted to replace the complete TV. I obviously have a twelve month manufacturers guarantee with the new one. :y
Parting with money for something that I can't see is painful. ;D ;D

I think costco, makro and john lewis offer 5 yr guarantees on alot of their tvs. You could keep an eye out for a promotion

Tunnie, my current LED TV can't get much thinner, it's only 20mm deep at its thickest point. ;D ;D
As Radar said, John Lewis is a good place to buy a TV. :y :y

but in most cases its a four years as you get one year free anyway on the tv,

if you buy your TV from John Lewis or Fenwicks you get a 5 year warranty as standard :y :y
They will also match any other price!!
