Yes, you read right. I am doing this engine change on my own. Why? because I want to. This is a pride thing and I am going to enjoy every minute of this. No I am not barking, I am just good at this sort of 'big' job and relish the challenge.
OK, so there are one or two hurdles along the way, but safety will be paramount. I have some decent tools and have now collected my little toy:

I have also done a little more preparation. Both cats are off as you can see:
(http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e219/ronaldmcburger/th_IMG_0062-1.jpg) (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e219/ronaldmcburger/IMG_0062-1.jpg)
And I have also popped the propshaft off and loosend all the bell housing bolts. The gearbox oil cooler pipes have also been disconnected:

And I have now only got the gear linkage, gearbox loom plugs and PAS pump pipes to disconnect, then off with both engine mountings and out she comes.
I drained most of the PAS fluid from the reservoir using a syringe. I will get some spillage, but this reduces it a lot.
On order: 2x manifold gaskets, 2x manifold to front pipe gaskets.
I have acquired a complete replkacement cats back system, plus another replacement Passenger side cat. That will cure the blowing exhaust once and for all.
Once the engine is out I will drop the gearbox off, then drop the new engine in after changing all the wiring over and doing the manifold gaskets on both sides. I will also take extensive photos of the engine when out for reference for anyone on here in future, even just for where stuff is!
Target is finished by saturday afternoon, but I do have work in between and a car auction to attend tomorrow.
All go. :y

One at Derby yesterday! :(

Take care on that slope, once the crane is at max lift to clear the slam panel it gets a bit unstable and will want to rush off towards the road, you might want to place some chocks behind the wheels to save having to restrain its enthusiasm yourself.

Good luck with this - I just wish I could attempt big jobs like this in so little time. Looking forward to the reports and pics!

Good on you! I know the feeling. It's immensely satisfying doing big jobs like this, and with all the right tools, it's less daunting that many smaller engine-in jobs.
If you really what to enjoy it, rebuild the engine too ;)
Hope it all goes well. Have fun!

Thansk all. Pete, the slope at the font here is VERY gradual. I am taking that into account though. If it goes over, it goes over. I won't be trying to stop it! I did that before with a Rover 2.6 straight 6. Boy was that a heavy lump. Broke 3 ribs doing that engine.
I may be off to peterborough in a minute to look at a car. Otherwise, that engine is coming out TODAY as I have work tonight and want to crack on whilst the weather is still dry.
Spent 2 hours at teh car auction this morning. I don't think I will bother anymore with them. Prices are silly high. I did miss one Focus TDci, 2004 04 CL, went for £3450, but it just appeared from the back somewhere. Wasn't in the usual lines, so something I didn't like there - no time to look properly so no bid from me. I suspect they were slotting it in as a favour to a dealer who bought it last week. Probably a serious problem somewhere.
No, I am going to look at a 53 plate Corsa CDti. MEGA mileage, but one owner (I suspect a driving school). Cheap as chips though, so I will see. Waiting for a call back. I won't pay what they want and won't travel until we have a provisional price sorted.

your a busy man Ronnie - you really should have come to the lakes for some recreational ;)

Ok. I am back from sunny Peterborough. One terrible crash the other side of the A1. Looked fatal to me, cars everywhere and fire service cutting various people out of cars. Tailback went about 3 miles when I saw it. Then they said on radio tailback had grown to 10 miles! I came back via Oakham, which is guaranteed to have some idiot towing a caravan along it - and it did!
Anyway, bought the car. A nice shiny red 2004 Corsa 1.3 CDTi. Surprisingly good condition and really drove well. Dealer just gave me the trade plates and keys, so I went for a good 20 minute drive including Orton Parkway, where I could give it some welly. No problems at all.
Knocked loads off and got it for £3100. Quite please. EXCEPT I now have to go back tomorrow to collect it.
Anyway, Deal done and I now have to sell my Gold one. Should be easy. Cracking little car with full history and 12 months MoT, also taxed. It sells itself almost!

I've never been down one of those backroads, EVER, without being stuck behind some arse with a caravan or a slow moving artic.
