Title: Er, er, er
Post by: Bionic on 15 September 2011, 06:20:07
Having just watched the early morning program which leads up to the news on BBC 1 and I am amazed that the presenters of that part of the program are employed at all considering that the 'word' er was spoken a number of times prior to every answer or sentence they spoke. I would not have expected that the 'professional' highly paid individuals had such a poor grasp on what is basically public speaking. It made them all look foolish and lacking in knowledge of the subjects they were attempting to make me believe they were 'experts' in.
The presenters of the BBC in days gone by coukld teach them quite a few things about presenting without the constant hesitation while they search for an answer. Er, er , er what next? Will the word er become an addition to the English Dictionary at its next update?  ;)

Bionic,

Why don't you switch off your computer and go along to the BBC and present it yourself ?

While you are at it, you could maybe nip along to the Police station and run TOWARDS a bomb scene, riot etc while the public are running AWAY from it or get a Fireman's uniform on and run INTO a burning building. ( Both Public Sector jobs )

I actually had a real problem with this when I returned to the UK after living in France for a while.  In french it is quite normal to say 'Err' a lot and I had become to used to it it merged in to my english.  I was picked up for it at work and it took several months to erradictate, it certainly was not easy.  I still do it form time to time esp when I go back to france to visit

er (ûr)
interj.
Used to express hesitation or uncertainty.

It's been in the dictionary for as long as I can remember, and that's a long time.
