Something I read tonight got me thinking...
Remember when NI contibutions were supposed to guarantee you free medical treatment and a pension?
Remember when the "tax disc" was the Road Fund Licence which was supposed to guarantee the upkeep of the nations highways?
The income from the above just goes into the Treasury's pot to spend as they wish.
If the funds had been ringfenced, do you think we'd have better welfare and roads?
Furthermore, do you think that the fact that the income from these mandatory payments amounts to a scheme whereby you are coerced into paying for something that will not reap the rewards promised?
Just sayin', as they expression goes... ;) ;)

It would be interesting to see the figures - income from road fund licence versus money spend on maintaining/ building roads etc. ;)

My understanding is that roughly twenty eight billion pounds is taken from road tax, petrol tax and VAT, and insurance tax each year. :y
Off which about six billion is used to keep our roads in tip top condition. :-/
