Kevin,
You could always get off at junction 12 and come in that way, or if you use a sat nav when you get to the three mile cross roundabout turn left and second right and come in that way.

Not at all mate. Used to live there for 2 years and would never move there again. It's like a small London - too many cars, too many people in old post-industrial town.

TB - oh yes it was. Here in Basingstoke it started to rain just after 7 when there was snow still on the road. But anyway - what have you been doing that far from your place?

I arrived in Reading around 8am, going up the 'old' A33 from M4 to centre, think its now called the Basingstoke Rd.  Had to dart off through one of the housing estates around there.  Was just slushy, not the compacted snow/ice we had in Brackley...

I sold my MIG to Stuart30 as I fancied a 4x4. However the Jeep Cherokee I bought proved too expensive to run so I sold that on and bought a 2.0l Mondeo Ghia X. Actually not a bad car, although some Omega Owners won't see that.

Thanks

What mark is it? II or III? I must say that Mondeo is much better than Vectra (B and C) and (MKIII) is just little below Omega status (for me).
I was really surprised to find legroom space at the back similar to what Omega offers. At the front there's also a lot of space. Hatchback hasn't got the biggest boot but estate is quite impressive. It's a comfy car as well and because the last good example of Vx/Opel were Omega/Vectra B, my next car will be Ford Mondeo.
I just don't know where GM is going - Astra is getting smaller and Vectra is tiny and is less reliable than any French car (and so expensive to fix).
Well, anyway, Mondeo is a nice car. :)

Yes, I agree mkaminski100. The Omega changed my opinion of what I thought would be a big Vectra and suprised me with how good it was.

In a similar manner, the Mondeo has suprised me at how good it is. Mine is a 1999 Mk2 saloon and as it seems like quite a good one, I intend to leep it until the right car comes along, be it Omega or not...

What I am suprised at is how rude people can be about a car. I turned up at the last meet wanting to talk about Marti's new gem, but after an hour was spent slagging my Jeep off, I was a bit disheartened. Now, it is the turn of the Mondeo.

Don't get me wrong, the Omega is a good car, but it's just that, a good car, not the only car on the road....

Jesus, get over it!!!

They're just jealous. What sort of Omega are you looking for? There's one we are chatting about - CDX V6 saloon :( for 600 quid.

Not in a rush mate, but it needs to be a 3.0l estate.

I may just go for a Mondeo ST24 Estate, just so that my fans have something to talk about :)

Title: Re: Reading meet No 7?
Post by: mkaminski100 on 11 February 2009, 08:23:36
ST's are overpriced, I would go for Ghia X 2.5V6 or 2.0. From MKIII range I like Titaniun and Mist but these are also too expensive.
The only problem with Mondeo is that it's going down with price so quickly so you have to be sure that you will drive it few years.
And as per Omega - auto or manual? Main reason I'm asking is petrol consumption ;)
My new Omega V6 auto barely did 32MPG on the motorway (will do some service and see, but don’t expect it go much above that) while Vectra V6 can easily do 40MPG (with leaking exhaust manifold). In town, REAL consumption is around 24-25. Don’t think Omega can even go close to that.
Now I have to buy ca £20 worth the petrol a week, but will it be worth to pay extra £10-15 for Omega additional comfort, or just sell both and buy Mondeo - something between Vectra consumption and Omega comfort. Now when I have a baby I have to calculate those things…

I agree Mike the omega is not the only car.
I don't think we were slagging off the jeep in that way, what I thought, and speak for myself on this one, was the money you paid for the jeep and the condition of it you could of got something better, economical and more spacious for your needs. Now the mondeo, I found when I had one, which was the MK1, was small inside yes it was economical and parts for it were reasonable just like the omega. The only problem I had was that I out grew it, you got alot of road noise from it as well, not alot of sound proofing iirc. They tend to rust alot as well and very quickly, not saying that the omega doesn't but not as bad.

Saturday lunch time. Driving into Reading town centre. No thanks.
Event at Madjeski. Aarrgh. Double no thanks.

Have you thought of perhaps having it a little out of the town. There's plenty of viable locations...

Loddon Bridge - just off A329(M). Park in Showcase Cinema car park and you have the George Pub less than 50 yards away if you're hungry/thirsty. *very* accessible. Could even park in the George car park if you wanted.

Alternatively how about a village like Sonning there's a few pubs with half decent car parks out that way.

I've a new Mk 4 Mondy lease car. It's OK but I'd much rather be charging up the motorways in the Omega as the road noise in the Mondeo is really annoying. Unfortunately the mondeo's a company car with fuel card and the miggy's in need of some TLC so currently SORNED while I sort out the niggles.

I have an issue with childcare.

Deb now works on a Saturday and I have the kids.

I may either bring them down for an hour or so, or wait til Deb finishes and then maybe call to see where you are (probably at Paul's work drinking his tea) and perhaps arrive late....

We'll see!
Thing is, I feel a little out of place bringing the Mondy :(

I`m surprised to hear that from a Reading located member-
this the 7th time a couple of us will drive 50 odd miles to the meet
and we never got stuck in traffic  (only once on a motorway for Farnborough Air Show)
Driving through town itself is pretty straight forward and we`re always lucky with parking spaces   8-)

Nail on head there mate! Dont matter about the stadium then(junction 10 for the George). Although still wise to check Reading fc and London Irish rugby fixture list first.

Also worth considering that perhaps people will be more likely to turn up with a tech 2 present, so somewhere nearer Alton and Kevin Wood would be sensible perhaps?

This would also support The Boy, as these diagnostics are a not cheap to buy and run.  With that in mind and how far Rob and m1ct have to travel each time maybe Basingstoke area would be more helpfull?

The Lord Darby pub is very near the fleet junction of the M3 iirc. Which also holds regular meets for other clubs so no parking problem at all there.

Maybe one day ill have time, but certainly not up for a battle with football and shopper traffic on a saturday in Reading town centre, bugger that.

Hohum - 800mile round trip to do next week :(

Hi Steve,

You should know by now that Mondeos are only good as engine donors.  ;)

Do you still need some ABS diagnosis or is that sorted yet?

Good to see everyone today (appologies to Chrisgixxer - I forgot to let you know I was heading over until I'd got back. Will get together some other time.).

.. and I had been trying to think of somewhere to meet but never considered the Lord Derby. Might be a plan. :y

Yeah, RobseyMV6 took some.

It was nice to see some kids there. These meets should now become family gatherings (especially as I struggle with childcare nowadays)

Come on then Rob, get 'em posted.

Well here are some pics that I took with the moby. Picture quality is ok but what do you all think? Nice to see a new face (loon [mv6]) and some other members as well. Nice day bit chillie but good day, to end the day as well some of us ended up in the Toby Carvery to warm up and had some food as well.

2 MIGs missing on the photo. There were 9 cars (7 MIGs, 1 Mondeo and 1 Westfield) so meeting was really good.
We were just late - spent an hour to get through Reading.
If Kevin is not around with proper Tech2, KoliberK or I have a cable to diagnose Vx cars so come along and join us next time so your problem can be sorted.
See you next time guys.

Well Morgan and Westfield are quite similar spelling... ;)

Some good points on the last couple of pages about location.  I (and mrs ians) would be up for a meet in the country - personally I can't hack sitting in Reading Saturday traffic more than needed.

But great to hear it was a good meet :y

My fault, resized them to the wrong size. Did try to re-resize them back to 160x120 but wouldn't work.
