Title: At which point did the manifold stud break?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 11 June 2009, 15:38:57
Just for a test - using a scrap V6 head, and a damaged exhaust manifold - I thought I'd have a laugh and see how tight I can do up a stud before it breaks.

How far do you reckon I got?  ::)

I voted for 60 but I reckon the thread in the head stripped before the stud broke :y :y

When I was changing my exhaust, both bolts sheared with little force. What's 15ft-lbs in funny units ?.

Not sure how relevant this is in real terms....

The stud should be very strong if tis already fitted to a head adn teh nut is being wound on.

If (as is often the case), the stud still has the nut on it and is then wound into the head, the moment of force on the head wont need to be much more than the torque value to pull the threads from the casting (the stud wont snap though).

So, not enough detail to answer!
