Title: What are these cars like then?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 19 June 2009, 22:49:33
You may have noticed me ask about the 1.7 TD.... this is why. I've got the chance of one of these, at a cracking price (not this exact car, but the same)

Any owners here? I'm guessing they drive like Veccy B ...

Could do you a maroon facelift 3.0 Elite with known recent history at a good price.....  Available now before it gets tested for a 13 month ticket.... ;)

They drive better than a Vectra B IMHO, Much firmer suspension and well bolted together.

If you buy it and want to sell it in the future let me know - I need a cheap diesel estate to go to the stables in as I'm wrecking my car in the Winter.

Broocie - this is purely no more than being nosey at this stage, but could you PM me an asking price please? :)

If it's the car I think it is, I wouldn't have any worries owning it (again)  ::)

You want to try driving the 8 valve version! That's even slower!  ;D  ;D  ;D
Overall though, I find it's not a bad car really. I can throw it into corners faster than I can the Omega, consequntly I have to be careful if I go to work in the Omega, because I always end up going into corners/bends far too fast! :o

Astrays are a fantastic handling machine, for sure..

I have it!... Astras for corners, Omegas for straight lines! Simples! ;)

or just trick the omega up  ;)

Personally I find the astra's seats unbarable - completely the wrong shape.

Fine for the person who wants to pile loads of 'orse poo in the back I spose ;D but not much else  :o

Had one of these in my lst job as a works car, (1.7dti) thrashed the nuts of it for 85000mls and it still went as well as the day it was deliverd with 8.1 mls on the clock, they drive well, handle reasonably well for an estate and fit a lot in to what seems like a small rear end, however i did find the cockpit somewhat confined.

Depends on the age but... If it's a GM lump then they are reasonable :y :y :y If it's Izuzu then steer clear :o :o :o

I've owned both variants in different cars and the GM lump is better. Suffers from leaky spill pipes between the injectors but I had an Astra Van on a S plate when spannering... It ran all day long if I was busy on call and never missed a beat but... Shredded a CV joint fairly easily under heavy abuse and prone to oil leaks.

Surprisingly quick when you actually drive one though... I beat the Fire Brigade to our workshop one night when they had been called 3 minutes before me (and I was sound asleep when called) and they were about a mile closer than me :o :o :o

TBH I'd happily have another one if they were a little bigger... Just a bit cramped for my 6'4" frame ::) ::)

I had a Cavalier with this 1.7TD with the Izuzu engine in, brilliant miles per gallon, recon to do over 500,000 miles if serviced regular :o

My little brother has always been an Astra fan - in fact, apart from a (surprisingly good) Citroen AX GT, all his cars have been Chevette/Nova/Astra - and has had a bucket load of Astras from Astra E to Astra H.

Those Astra G estates aren't bad cars - little bouncy/skipping in corners if empty if driving enthusiastically ::).

The 1.7TD engine though, that truely is the biggest heap of crap you have ever come across.  It was appalling in its day performance wise, and not that great mpg wise (remember consumption figures were worked out differently then).  The engine is not a patch on the 1.8/1.9 Pug diesels you know.

The performance of the thing, humans don't live long enough to try it ;D

Been put off the diesels.

I'm off to look at a 1.6 16v Factory LPG Estate..... it'll be the small block VX engine, which I know very well, so makes sense......

Check what make... If it's a Koltec-Necam (which I suspect it will be) knowledge and parts are hard to come by. They also have a stupid in tank pump (LPG), IIRCC, which is prone to going belly up. Not cheap :o :o :o

Personally I'd steer clear of a factory fit (if it's Koltec-Necam) and buy a standard one and pay for a Stag kit for it :y :y

I know the Koltec install reasonable well, and have a fair few spare parts for it here.

if it failed, I'd replace with stag, but otherwise I'm impressed with the factory fit LPG'd Vauxhalls.

My (and Taxi Drivers) veccy estate did over 230,000 miles - with a factory fit - and it only went wrong once in that time, not bad really.

I agree though, I've heard of others who have had issues....

Like most things Vx... They suffer from poor maintenance ::) ::) ::)

driven that shape Astra quite a few times, think its the G? version.

Rock hard seats, not a lot adjustment in them either.... although i would have one over a Focus.

1.6 16v petrol was a perky engine.

No match for an Omega in anyway!

1.6 16v is OKish performance wise, nothing to write home about. One to avoid is the 1.6 8v - that really is a dog of an engine, something like 70bhp...

i had a 1.6 16v petrol saloon for a year or so and they handle great and did average 45-50 mpg i wouldnt go the diesel route personaly cos its more expensive  . been proved  unless you do over 15k a year no point in having a diesel :y
