Title: MV6 goes BANG, big style :(
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 18 June 2009, 09:45:42
Yesterday the MV6 was finshed. New cats and exhaust fitted. It's just had a top end refurb, heads off job.

The refurb was all done by me, slowly and carefully. Everything double checked, timing, torques etc  correct - no problems.

Started her up - ran first time. Ticked over on the drive for about an hour, smooth as anything.

Went for a drive - covered about 10 miles. Loads of power, sounded awesome, smooth as anything. Stopped for fuel, joined a dual carriageway.

Did about 60 miles - and pulled out to overtake a pug. Autobox kicked down - nice surge of power, and.....

BANG, Crunch, Clatter , Oil light, loads of smoke, and  Dead - contents of the sump all on the floor  :-[

Pulled onto shoulder and alerted relevent services, while she continued to leak.

In short, nice hole in engine block.

That noise was a very sickening feeling after all that work, and after enjoying the car so much...  :-[ :'(

I keep beating myself up asking if it's something I did - but I really don't think it is. The job was done well, no corners cut - and there was no problem with oil delivery etc. It happened so suddenly, I can only think it was looming anyway  :-/

Oh and just to top it off, after being stuck for 2 hours waiting for a tow, I tried my other Elite - and that was also dead. Just span without starting.

Paperclipped that one - Code 19  >:(  ;D

i thought this type of thing only happened to me! know how u feel, got my mum an 06 1.4 astra with 25k and took it a roadtest to check everything, oilpump decided it wasnt playing and broke up. stripped her down, got all the peices out and she had only just grabbed no.3 big end. replaced and rebuilt only for the engine light to be on! bloody vauxhalls

I dearly want to repair it, but don't easily have the facilities available for an engine change at present ....  :(

Sounds like an oil feed issue to a big end.

I assume the T vents were re-fitted to the heads?

I don't believe in coincidences - as I'm sure the Admin Team will agree following OOF's reboot earlier in the week, and a shit load of corruption a few minutes later ::)

Assuming everything went back together properly, I would have to suggest oil lack somehow - some dirt falling in oilways and clogging strainer? Sump plug working loose? Filter/oil pipes working loose?

And I suspect they won't let me do another reboot in a hurry  ::), which is a bugger, as the OOF server is getting towards needing yet another RAM upgrade, which needs the server to be shut down.  I hate Linux - the OS and app only needs about 80Mb RAM. I don't believe in coincidences

I agree - I work on the same principle, but however much I think about it, I can't imagine how I could have done anything to cause it.

I keep beating myself up wondering if I did something - Everything was fitted spotlessly clean - set correctly - torqued correctly.

I didn't touch the oil cooler - and it was fine before, so it can't have "co-incidently" leaked...

Sump plug all intact.

When it blew - it dumped LOADS of oil on the road - indicating it hadn't all leaked out, and caused the failure.

Can't get my head around this one, other than bloody bad luck!

It's getting a bit like your tractor TB - it's personal - and it WILL be fixed !!!  ;D

It does smack of lack of oil (not necessarily in the sump), so worth checking oil pick-up/strainer if resusing anything of the engine.  But then if the conrod is hanging out of the block, you ain't using that engine ;)

dont beat yyourself up James, it aint your fault!!  hers a poss scenario but i wouyldnt mind betting its the right one,
now i dont know who you b ought the car off/ and im not blaming them in any way
but here is how i see it and believe me i have seen many cars go this way!!!
the headgaskets were gone correct? so this means that water was in the combustion chambers or being forced into the oil gallerys on the head, either way it will have the same effect, and that is water gets mixed with the oil, which is not a good lubricant for big ends, so we dont know how ling the gaskets were gone or how many miles it has done with a water and oil mix in the sump, the previous owner may not have known either
as a lot of the water will be burnt/condensed  off as the oil runs
very hot, however enough of it will score the bigends and mains, if the oil was changed just before you got or indeed a while before you got it there wouldnt be much siign of the impending disaster, as fresh oil will take up the slack in the system till it gets really hot when the tolerances will simoly become to large and the bigend will let go,
so what i am sayimg is a motor that has haed gasket gone will often blow its bottom end if used for anytime with the headgasket gone!!! unless yiou had pulled the sump off and checked a big end and a main bearing for scoring you wouldnt have known ,
hope that makes sense to all ???
and answers a question?
seen it to many times to know it happens a lot!!

The HG failure on the V6 is normally just coolant ways leaking to outside of block (as it was in this case). The firerings remained in tact, and the oil appear unaffected - I did see and drive this car before the HG was replaced. It went OK (needed a good service imho), certainly nothing to suggest any issue at all with firerings, and both the oil and 'water' (no antifreeze in it) were clear of contamination.

I'm still of the opinion maybe a bit of gasket (or other crud - I bet the coolant ways were in a mess) dropped down the oil return into sump, eventually getting sucked up into oil pickup....

It did have evidence of a lot of "bathroom sealent" IIRC.  :(

Bad news, James, and must be gutting after doing so much work on it.

I'm new to the V6 engines (a bit late in the day!) so I don't know very much about them, but when I do an engine rebuild I always like to put an oil pressure gauge on it so that on first startup the oil pressure can be monitored. Although I don't suppose that would necessarily show up a blockage in one of the galleries. Just a thought.

I spread the components of a 2.0 8V SEH in a CalibrE (note the E) across the Runcorn Bridge at Rush hour after the conrod decided to go through both sides of the block and destroy the starter motor in the process.

Someone else owns it now  [smiley=cry.gif]

i know exactly how you feel... that ex plod MV6 i had, ok it needed odd bits sorting like the multiram and exhaust manifold but ran spot on apart from that, serviced it at markey marks then within a week it died with believed big end bearings, it had chips of metal in the intake and in the sump!

really is gutting and annoying... look what it did to me, it was so bad i bought a tank :P
