Title: The head is off the Astra... good news?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 12 July 2009, 17:56:54
Well seeing as the forecast wasn't quite accurate, and we have had beating sun today, I removed the head from the Astra.

Not a bad little job. No major snags really. I removed the exhaust manifold, popped cambelt off, took all the intake rubbish and connectors off - and removed the head along with inlet manifold as one. Then removed inlet manifold with head on the floor.

I looked into the exhaust valve ports - all dry. Loads of white deposits on no4 exhaust valve stems.

Looked in inlet ports - bl@@dy hell - looks a bit wet! The valve seats look like they're covered in oil

Hopefully a simple stem seal job will fix this - fingers crossed  ::)

What does anyone think about a tad of skimming, given that it's LPG?  8-)

Oh - I think it will run better on LPG when it's back together too. Found a good old split where the feed pipe comes out of the vaporisor..   ::)

Just to add - the bottom of the valves on no1 cyl all have loads of white deposits on them.

Does this mean that cylinder has been running lean?

What colour were the stem seals fitted to these engines in the factory?

I always thought they were green.

The ones in this car are red - did VX ever use red seals, or has this beast been apart before....  :-/

Original heads in my 2.6 have red seals

The red seals are the shite ones that fall off

Well the 4 that came out so far, were unusually easy to remove - came out with normal pliers very easily.

Interestingly, the valve stem went up and down with no grip at all, they are shot to hell...

Pot 1 is the worst, loads of black gunge on the valve seat areas... these are the valves that are covered in white deposits too, I reckon it's due to oil burning in the cylinder...

Oil burning wont cause white deposits
