Keep the heater on hot too.
Carry a large amount of water with you.
Cross your fingers/pray/grit your teeth!

They (all of them, not just AA) are getting wise to this

There are plenty of transporting services, usually around £1 per mile for cheapest

I still makes sense to pay. If you have to travel there, (180 miles in petrol) then you have to get it back (90miles) in petrol. Countless bottles of water and if you aren't lucky, a breaked engine.

270 miles alone is a tank of petrol. If it makes it back, however I suspect it would take most of the day to get it back, taking many breaks.

I have certainly 'broken down' 2 days after joining AA. Outside my mates house, the previous owner. All I did was make sure the engine was warm, so when AA turn up it looks like I got there. Then ring 'em up and get it towed. If your brother is a member, even cheaper. Make sure you have some form of ID on you (they have accepted credit cards as proof before) in your brothers name. I joined the RAC, added my mum as an additional card holder, but didn't need to add my dad as he had the same name as me, so if he needed them, he had plenty of ID with his/my name on it.

I obviously don't promote this kind of behaviour, but when needs must, you do what ya gotta.
