Title: Question for the MOT testers
Post by: Andy B on 20 July 2009, 09:59:49
While I was getting my car MOT'd this morning I was discussing the recent inclusion of tow bars to the test. The tester was interested in how my detachable bar fits to the car which then got the conversation round to the commercial drop pin type of bar that might be fitted to a Transit etc. he said that if the pin wasn't there when the vehicle was presented for test, then in theory, it should fail, even if the rest of the bar was OK.  :-?
So does that mean that if I present my car for MOT test without the detachable ball, or if the ball of a 2 bolt flange type of bar is not fitted because in day to day use it obscures some of the number plate, is that then a fail?  :-?  :-?

Surely not!   :-/  :-/

Does that mean I'd be better off selling my 'van & take the towbar off my car then?  ;D ;D ;D

if the detachable part of the towbar is not present it cannot be tested and would only be an advisory to that effect to cover the testers bottom!! cannot be a fail!! :y

Sounds sensible to me, but he was sure that if the drop pin of the other type was not there it'd be a fail .......  :-/

In response to original question   if its not fitted then we cant test it.   We can only test what is there at time of test so if the ball has been removed we cant test it but we can test the rest ie the mounts, bolts ,condition of the rest of the tow bar ect.

Sounds good to me. So is 'my' tester is wrong about the Transit type of drop pin tow ball? He interpreted the rules to say that if it wasn't there at test, then it was a fail .... same as if the R clip was missing - surely an advisory.

I would say that if the pin wasnt there then it cant be tested but if the pin was and the r clip wasnt then it would probably fail as its a locking device (id need to give vosa a call to confirm).

Laugh not

Other tests are magazine and not searchable, but I do remember that they out dragged some quickish cars.

I want to see a towing test with the new 500bhp supercharged Range Rover

No, doesn't sound like AA. He pulls over to smoke, then dusts his car in case any ash fell on it.  ;D

Gee, I don't think you guys like caravans or mot testers!  My IQ is bigger than my age - does that get me blackballed on the 3 strikes count? [smiley=cry.gif]

Don't take the anti-caravan posts to heart ....... some love to slag caravans off, but they love them really.
I don't think we dislike MOT testers though  ......  :-? ::) ::) ::) :y
