Title: URGENT HELP - Markiec wifes broken down
Post by: Markie on 14 June 2007, 18:40:06
I've hijacked hubby's account in desperation ...can you guys help as he's en route only half aware

what has happened is....

I had a soft tyre so I stopped to inflate it. When I attached the pump I noticed what looked like water running from underneath and when I bent down to check I noiced a whining from the front end and steam/smoke from under the bonnet so immediately turned the engine off. Gave it 5 minutes and decided to have a look under the bonnet. All belts seem to be intact and steam appears to be coming from behind and under the timing belt. The strange thing though is that during the whole escapade the temperature never went above what's generally it's normal operating temperature..... I'm thinking water pump or could it potentially be more serious than that?
Thanks guys......MrsMarkie :o

How much water - did it have a colour?

Didn't look like an awful lot of water but there's absolutely nothing left in the expansion tank so it's possible that it's been running out whilst I was driving.

As for colour..... hmmmm.....possibly very slightly rust coloured

Water pump. Which car - the Veccy with the oil cooler? Inevitable the water pump seal would fail some time after....

Where are you?  AA/RAC recovery an option?  Would be best, perhaps.  Sounds like a knacked water pump or holed hose at the least but potentially worse....  :-X

Still waterpump, or sometime in the valley (stat or oil cooler plate) leaking that way...

It's parked up pretty safely close to the town centre as I had stopped to do the tyre anyway. Im hoping it's only the pump or else my work had better make provision for horse parking!!

It's the 2l Veccy.

Anyway, he's in now and trying to get the dis pack into the Omega so that I can at least drive it. He's asked me to ask ..... if he has two ignition leads connected the wrong way round will the car just run rough or will it not run at all?

If its a v6 it will still run id have thought but only on 4 cylinders obviously.

4 pot will have no chance on 2 cylinders

It may run very badly, or not at all....

Hi Guys.....Markie here now -  NOT MRS  :o

Thanks for the help, been to see the 4 pot veccy - wife phoned me moaning about burning, water peering out and grinding noises etc etc...you get the picture.

She also told me her battery on mobile was just about to go flat as the call dropped due to said battery. Just managed to advise beforehand to leave the car - dont touch it - get a taxi home and post on here, which she did  :o

Anyway - no coolant in expansion tank - no emulsification of oil, and a great big mark where the water has come out - clearly water pump - nasty grinding noise when i turned the car over for a few seconds, but behind the grinding you can hear the engine is ticking over fine ( if you know what i mean)  Topped coolant up and its coming straight back out the same area - its just coolant though and nothing else.

So ive secured it in the cctv car park and will order a water pump, looks like i am now doing a public water pump change over the weekend or early next week  ;D ;D

In between this i did the quickest dispack change ever and got aBobs old estate running - albeit rough so need to retrace my steps and check the leads on passenger side ( possibly wrong way round)

Wonder whats gonna go wrong next today  ::)

Tis all good news. Mrs Markie got home safe, car sounds like a simple waterpump, so all-in-all a good conclusion to what could have been a bad day :)

Aye - 9pm last night your old Estate got its new dispack. Took it for a spin and it seems better but not quite 100% probably not put plenum etc back together right and will retrace steps tomorrow...it was one hell of a quick rebuilt  ::)

Took it for a spin in the rain and realised i hadnt replaced the wipers though  ;D ;D

LOL, we did that at the cambelt party in Brackley. At around 11pm, sent MaxV6 off in his car. Odd, when 30mins later he was back, soaked to the skin. "Can I have my wipers back please?" he said ;D

Markie, remember water pump on the 2.0 is driven off the cambelt so remember the locking kit!  :)

May as well change that while you are at it.
