Title: Dash mounted handbrake
Post by: MartinP on 31 August 2009, 01:01:24
I am looking for a dash mounted handbrake lever for my kit car, One of the Alfa models has one and the Ford ranger.

Anyone know of other vehicle that I might be able to try & get this type of lever from.

Mercedes W123 series had them. Converting to air is doable but a lot of hard work just to have your handbrake in a different place!

Quite a few american cars had them, maybe try an american car breaker.
Also if memory serves me correctly some japanese cars had them in the late 80s early 90s.

Also the honda crv.

The Austin/Morris/Wolsely/etc 1800 (landcrab) had a dash handbrake.  Well, the Wolsely 18/85S that I once owned certainly did....   ;)

I think the term is "shotgun handbrake"

Changing over is gonna be a right pain.
Extending the cable, securing brackets for the shotgun mechanism etc.

A lot of work involved there buddy :y

Nissan vannette had them (we've got one at work, 'K' reg) and also old Vauxhalls, (cresta, Velox, etc).
worth trying the breakers, or fleabay for one, maybe complete with the fixings and the longer cable, etc.

of course there is nothing to stop you mounting a standard floor mounted lever off a mini say(short) on the bulkhead,  so its out of the way???? :y and in a vertical position?? rather than an umbrella type one? also dont the delicas have umbrella handbrake?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will follow up some of them and see what comes up.

The reason for an "umbrella handbrake" is so that I do not need to position it on the drive shaft tunnel as it can intrude on "elbow" room in a Seven type sportscar.

There is an option to position it in the vertical, on the passenger footwelll, but i was trying to hide it away (and make my own individual marks on the car).

they have a pedal in the foot well. press it down and the hanbrake is applied. then they have a handle on the dash that releases it when pulled.

Toyota HiLux would be my bet. Have driven a few and they have such a handbrake. Feels like it's cable operated too.

Probelm is, they don't end up in scrap yards very often.

Think them mercs are too new then maybe? I thought you put the handbrake on by pulling the handle, and twisted it to release.

But then again, this was years ago and I could be wrong. ;D
