Does anyone know the exact laws when it comes to window tinting? i know the police now have devices that can check how much light a tint is letting in, so is it just the front driver and passenger door windows that cant be tinted too dark but the rear window and rear door windows can be as dark as you like?

anything to the rear of the B pillar can be as dark as you like... the front is a touchy subject, some coppers tend to make it up as they go along!... some say any film on the front windows is illegal, others i think its 60% light has to get through?

Does this include the main rear window?
im really not sure about the front door windows, i saw a copper in work stop 2 cars and made the lads remove the film from passenger and drivers windows and to me it didnt look too dark at all

all the rear windows can be as dark as you like even the rear window, you must have two outside mirrows though.
the front windows is I believe 70% ligh threw.
Might be better to google it or have a look at the mot regulations or by the dvla to try and find something that you can print out to carry in your car if the police do stop you.

Depends when the car was first registered as to how much tint is allowed forward of the B pillar.
Any vehicle registered prior to April 85 has to allow a minimum 70% of light through the front side windows & windscreen.
Any vehicle registered after that has to allow a minimum of 75% light through the windscreen (70% still allowed on front side windows).
Any car regardless of age can have "limo black" windows rearwards of the B pillar if the owner/driver is so inclined.

Ghost is correct there. However the way the relevant law was worded can be interpreted that ANY film (even a clear one) on the windows to the front of the A pillar is illegal. However, most plod won't bother, unless you really pee them off!!! Tints applied by smoking the glass ( self coloured glass) must allow 70% light through.

yes you can have anything behind the b pillar on my audi my rear window is painted balck and the sides are vinyled to hid the bare MDF and the Amp rack in the boot

Rears can be as dark as you like, but I think it's something you need to think about carefully. I wouldn't even chance it on the front windows, why reduce your visibility? There could be a moron on a moped in the dark with no lights, your tinted windows make it harder to see him, you pull out...and there you go. You cry out to the police please stop me if you tint them...and they'll oblige.
-
I think the police usually make people take the tint off the front windows because as most cars have some sort of tint on them anyway these days, any further tinting will take the window over the threshold of 70% light. They have a light meter to test this at the roadside and usually make you take the film off there and then.
-
NO CAR is allowed by law to have ANY tint whatsoever forward of the B-pillar (except mine) :y
-
Omega tinting at the front is close to the legal limit anyway, but you can tint rears as much as you want
-
just tell the tinting people you need it legal

Ive got mine tinted all around, have had a few dubious looks from passing cops but nothings been said - though i think its more to do with the fact that i look pretty young and usually have a shaved head, going around glasgow in a big black car with a private reg ;D
