Title: Track Rods
Post by: Craig_R on 15 June 2007, 18:18:11
Changed the Track Rods on both side today And Ohhhh do i need in tracking up I must of been abit out in my guesstemate of the lenth of them it was one scary ride home.

I had the Girl Friend sit in the car yesterday turning the steering wheel back and forth and i was feeling the ball joints as she did and found the near side track rod end was loose and thats why i replaced them today but after replacing them i still have a slight klonk when i move the steering back and forth when the car is not moving Grrrr I am hoping its just the trackrods being miles out and once the tracking is done it will go. I guess it could be one of the other ball joints under there if its not i guess its the steering Box  :'( If it is I be getting that rippedout and another put in.

The Amount of time I am putting into this I better find out what is is

Check the bottom ball joints and the front wishbones, this can be done with weight on wheels by grabbing the top of the wheel and pulling it hard towards you back and forth. If all seems fine then my money will be on top suspension mounts.......

Can rule out the wish bones as they were changed on sunday

I dont think its the suspension as its only small movment of the steering wheel that makes the knock thats felt throught the steering wheel

Wonder if the idler arm would cause a slight knock

something is not 100% tight if its not any of the ball joints it has to be the steering box

I did not get the chance to get anyone to sit in the car moving the steering wheel yet but i had a look under anyway and Hummmm I must of been Miles out with the new track rods setting them as i can move them by hand really easy.

I might put the old ones back on till I get it tracked I dont want to knack the new ones driving over to Tonys new place in Hemel.

If they are to loose IE being able to rotate the track rods will it knack them driving the car ?

Ill leave them on till I get someone to move the steering But I cant really drive with them like they are The steering is sooo Loose and the tires are Squeeling around Corners, Not Worried about scrubbing the Tires As I have new ones to go on

If the centre adjuster bar is loose then so will your steering be. You MUST tighten the two bolts on the adjuster....... also if you still have the old ones then measure the distance properly and then set the new ones the same. Car should drive fine to the tyre shop for tracking ;)

I have Just Stuck The Old ones Back On for now Thanks God For Scissor Ball Joint Splitters not damaging the new ones i removed.

Ill put the new ones back on just before i go for the Full Geo Set up

Once I replace the rear Shocks find out what the knock is on the steering and put back on the Track Rods.

I just need to use the car and I dont want to track the front and them go for a full Geo set up by Tony Ill just be Throwing money away
