Title: oil filter magnet
Post by: mathewst on 08 September 2009, 15:35:07
I've found this on Ebay and must admit it makes sense a little. The magnet around the oil filter would definitely grab metal pieces from the engine better.
Here is the link

Anyone had any experience with it???

I totally agree with the theory, some sump plugs are magnetised, and I have found swarf on them in the past. I would like someone to confirm there is no risk of damage, from magnetic fields around sensors, ECUs etc.

I thought engine oil sumps had a magnet in the bottom anyway but would out of interest like to know if this would be a good buy or not :-/.

Why would you gain upto 5% in MPG using this ?

That'd be the added snake oil ;) ;D

The Mini from 1959 onwards had a magnetic sump plug,as did most BMC car's from that time onward

I've had a filter mag fitted to my Carlton GSi24v for the last couple of years without any problems regarding interference to sensors etc. I've also heard that the magnetic sump plugs are not strong enough to hold onto metal particles whilst the oil is in circulation and only attract them when the engine is turned off.

::)Its obvious, the powerful magnets pull the car down to the earth's iron core thus creating down force and so better aerodynamics and grip ;D.

Nope Pete, the magnet is using the car in front of you to pull you so you're stealing his speed ;D

Seems like a good idea when you think the engine oil is in the gearbox and there's no synchro mesh on the gears ::)

Struggling to see the benefit as the filter will catch any significant metal particles

Yep, I think the oil pump would have been mullered in short order when exposed to swarf from the gearbox.

Then just hope you dont have a little 1,0 or ,1,2cc car in front or you will have a couple of problems [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=evil.gif] [smiley=evil.gif]

yeah the BMC's only had the magnetised sump plug as EP says due to the Gearbox sharing the same oil as all omegas have there own gearbox oil i cant see the benefits

the oil filter costs £1.99 on TC and does an excellent job i changed my oil every 5k on the V6 and never had any dirt coming out the engine

Found a good use for this.If you drop a small screw, bolt etc.I now off a service where i will drive to your garage and in seconds the small part is found.I also off a scrap metal collection service :D

On my Mk1 Astra (many year ago...) I placed a small piece of magnet on top of the drain plug - drain plug was metalic so the magnet stuck to it well with no need for glue - and yes there were metal shreds on the magnet when taking the plug off for oil change.

Did not do this on the Omegas though...

Well, I can see a problem if you try to jump a level-crossing while a train is approaching....
