Title: bloomin locking wheel nuts
Post by: The Red Baron on 28 September 2009, 18:49:02
trouble ive had today, locking wheel nut stripped off, not the type you can knock a socket onto. tried drilling it off, drills have a better chance of going through butter. so, dismantled the caliper from the inside, off with the bearing dust cap & took the whole bloomin lot off, wheel, disc, hub & caliper bracket. was a bit of a jiggle. good job i have a spare set of everything. moan, moan.  :(

Are there any without the spinning collar? The lock bolts originally fitted to my car were the type with 3 holes in the face - the kind that ATS/Kwik Fit/etc will break the pins off the key for you with their windy gun - those now fitted are the later cake cutter type. Both types have a spinning collar, but the earlier type was somewhat thinner tha those now fitted.  :y

Can you not hammer on a suitably undersized impact socket then? Or get a set of removers?

The 2.2 I'm breaking has the 3 prong affair and no key! My ½" cold steel chisel and a suitable impact socket soon dealt with that problem ;)

What about drilling a hole central and a decent stud extractor?

Buy a cheap Halfrauds set that you don't mind shearing off then, you don't want your best set of 'Draper's' getting damaged ;) ;D ;D

ATS used a similar set to remove mine, their's had a finer 'thread'/helix though .... probably best used with a windy gun.  :y

bugger all to knock on to, also will need a 22/3mm socket then you run out of space between the nut & the hole in the wheel.

If you were closer I could lend you my universal socket.  It will do anything upto 32mm in diameter as long as it is not completely round.  Prob one of my most useful tools  :y

Just keep drilling larger holes till the head comes off, take the wheel off and either weld a nut to the end or get the mole grips on what's left of the stud.

at last, drilled from both sides to weaken the stud, knocked an even bigger torx bit into it. it came off/out.  :y
however i need a new hub @ £58 >:(
