Just an observation after looking through the cars for sale section here. Another car forum I go on has a cars for sale section, just like this one.
They have a requirement that ads should have a certain format, or it gets pulled.
That is basic info like model, mileage, T & T, location and description and condition of car and a firm price. And most important pics pics pics. Ok they can sometimes look good on pics, infact better that they are. But let's be honest who would travel a long distance on a vague ad without pics and decent description at least.
Sold two cars recently on said forum both sold within two days..........because I put the effort in to start with.
I would have put the cars up for sale here but they were not Omegas.
What do others think, fair comment.

Yep, fair comment.
I think the way an ad is put together says as much about the seller as it does the car.....
One particular recent advert immediately springs to mind where the ad was not only brief, with a poor quality single photo, but the sellers attitude left alot to be desired when more info/pics were requested......
I also believe anyone using this site JUST and PURELY to advertise cars for sale shouldnt be allowed to do so.....

Which is why there is 250? post count requirement, usually gets rid of most.
Its a good idea, its pointless trying to sell you car with just 1 line of text.

I also think that the 101 comments that people post on advert threads should be stopped, if people want to buy the car they will, if they don't they won't.

This is a forum, if someone feels a point should be made, let them i think.
If a seller wants zero comments, then place an ad in the paper or something.

So what's wrong with general chat for that?

General chat is not a for sale section, no need to duplicate threads

Just seems to me that the certain few seem to love slagging off most of the for sale cars.
If they are too expensive for the person who slags them off why comment? They were never intending to buy them.
Bit like the toddler who wants to steal the other toddlers toy but doesn't actually want to play with it.
-
We do try to keep the sales threads tidy and relevant but, sometimes, we are unable to prevent things kind of going off at a tangent.
As to preset format, etc... Fair comment however I for one think that the other comments as regards info/pics to be more relevant. If the seller wants to put a bit of time in and set up a decent add, then fair play to them. The one liners with a fuzzy pic gets no interest from buyers, imo.

Agreed Andy. It P's me off when someone's trying to sell their car & all that some on here can do is bring it down for what ever reasons. If you're not interested in buying & your not asked for an oppinion, then butt out. All positive comments are different for obvious reasons & are a good thing.
So what if they've over priced their car, they'll more than likely won't get any buyers (at least they've tried). Not all member's are as up to date with car prices like other's like to think they are.
It's true that a car ad needs pics. I recall the days of old when all ads had no picture, you'd phone up the seller & they'd tell you the cars the best there is, but when you get there it's a pile of rust. You can't see for sure the cars a cracker by the pics, but they help along with the presentation of the ad.

Oictures can be useful but they don't tell the whole story. I have recently viewed two cars in seperate dealers but had pictures posted on autotrader and both where utter rubbish in the flesh for the price they where asking.
Never again will I travel to view a car.

In reply 5 I made more or less the same observations this morning.
Also, (but nothing at all to do with the link above) the slagging off of cars.) Sometimes it happens, but normally that is when there is a lack of info, pictures or replies or the seller is being a tad unrealistic ::)
Allthough I dont agree with it, I have to agree it's a forum and sometimes there has been situations where sales for parts and cars have occasionally got out of hand.
Maybe a template as a sticky could be made up, then car sales only remain for sale if they have been filled in according to the template.

I only tend to forward my opinions on cars and pricing when the seller invites members to do so....
Nothing wrong with that !!!!
And anyway, the very word FORUM by definition is......
forum (plural forums or fora)
1.A place for discussion.
2.A gathering for the purpose of discussion.
3.A form of discussion involving a panel of presenters and often participation by members of the audience.
4.An Internet message board where users can post messages regarding one or more topics of discussion
So if we are not allowed to express opinions this ceases to be a forum.....

I sell cars to earn a living, and I do list cars on here. But I certainly hope no one things I just use this forum for that. As a seller, I have no problem with people commenting on my ads...even if that's in the form of a negative comment. People's opinions are important. I sold my 2.2 CDX with 36k for £2460...it was advertised at £2700. There was an equal bunch or replies saying that's 'well overpriced', and some saying 'that's a good price...good luck.' If I had a problem with people expressing their thoughts about a car I was selling, I'd have to think hard and long about what I'm doing. I'm desperately trying to shirt the 2.6 Elite I've got, and for example webby23 provided some honest, helpful comments which I appreciated. If someone simply wrote, 'it's way to expensive' I'd think well, that's not particularly helpful...you've got to at least provide some evidence to back up your point. But I'd never have an issue with that person, life's too short. It's the same as if I came into their office and told them they're working too slowly, or that their work isn't good enough without providing at least a valid point to back that up. And I do agree, that an advert should be as full as possible. The advert for the 2.6 Elite has as many details as I could think of and pictures. However, the 3.2 elite estate has few details...simply because I don't know any more. The vehicle isn't with me yet. It's sheer bone idle I think to advertise a car with few details if you have those details to hand.

The fact remains the same- Someone would like to sell their car & other folk picking fault with it may put some one off, so it goes for a lot less or worse unsold.
Like what's been mentioned already "if you're invited to comment then do so, but if not, don't".
Would you ring up an advertiser in Auto Trader & say "your cars way too expensive. Oh that's crap & blah blah" I think not, you'd soon get told to break off, so why on a forum.
I'd certainly tell you to break off.
-
I'm in agreement with Tunnie.
This is a forum - and by very nature, people can therefore comment on any thread they wish, as long as it's relevent to the original topic.
If you're saying this shouldn't be possible, then why not have all for-sale threads "locked" after the first post, and people can then PM the seller for more info.
I don't think that should happen - but, it's the only way you'll stop people expressing their opinions.
On a forum, they have a right to make whatever comments lthey like, as long as it's civil - as much as you have a right to tell them to break-off.... :y

Thats a good point, infact, lets lock all threads as soon as they are started so no one can discuss anything, no one gets the hump ;D

I agree, to an extent, that anyone can respond to any post. I also agree that such responses should be both pertinant and relevant to the thread in question, avoiding simple 'its too dear/tatty/non standard/chavved up' comments without anything to back such comments up.
Also agree that a seller has an equal right to respond to negative comments but I would also ask that you consider the following....
Would you rather view a forum thats relatively civilised or one which, once a negative post or three is added, quickly degenerates into a slanging match?
Its a fine line the admins/mods have to keep and hopefully the majority appreciate whats being attempted.
GenChat is where posts can and often do (expectedly) go waaaay off from the original post but I feel that a for sale thread should be more succinct and to the (original) point.
/my tuppence worth.... :y

At the end of the day there a 3 values on any one car.
What value the seller see's it at.
The value the buyer see's it at.
The 3rd value is the one the buyer agrees to pay the seller and if all is well they both walk away with a smile.
Sadly not all sales are equal, this is where the little black book comes in with the 3 values of retail, trade and poor.
Having been in a trade where I have seen the motor trade at work you soon realise they buy according to one book and sell according to annother. Neither of which take into account a new mot, a full set of new boots, a new water pump and timing kit, a pair of new rocker gaskets and a trip to WIM after having a set of 20" snow flakes fitted with the afore mentioned bootis or even the full lifetime warrantied stanless exhaust system.
This is why pictures, an excellent descriptition and as much history as possible are a must.

All valid points on there own merit, both 'for' & 'against' and well put by each & every poster. Isn't that how it should be? :y
