Title: URGENT: Zafira A Clutch Pedal Loose
Post by: MutantCav on 10 September 2009, 08:30:10
Any ideas before I take the Zafira to a garage??

The clutch pedal (53 Zafira A 1.8 Dual Fuel) had a bit of give yesterday, about a third...it now goes at least half way down before any resistance is felt and suddenly very very difficult to put into any gears...

I figure the clutch fluid is leaking but anyone know if its a sealed unit or if you can top it up?? If its sealed will it be the clutch slave that needs replacing??

Thanks for any help :)

The clutch reservoir will be shared with the brake's like on the Astra. The Zafira is a variation on the Astra so the clutch slave will be a combined do-nut cylinder/thrust race which you change as a unit. It'll be the subframe off to remove the gearbox like the Astra.  :'(

Yeah that description ties in with the look of the slave unit on ebay...had a further look and there is no brake fluid missing, in fact its slightly above full...strangely after pumping the clutch pedal which seemed to have no effect then ringing a local garage to have a look at it...it went back to working as normal next time it started to drive it down there...pedal is back to just a 3rd of the way down before resistance...very odd...only thing I did I guess between it not working and working again was remove the cap off the brake fluid reservoir so maybe it released some air or something??

Its at the garage to have the system bled to see if that helps...otherwise I guess its gonna cost some money  >:(  >:(

I hate these 'sealed' units. It was the same on my ZT. Cost a rather fortune in labour to replace a cheap slave unit.

Garage says he thinks its the master cylinder...then phoned for part price and the parts guy couldnt find it...just to check will a 53 1.8 Zafira have a clutch master cylinder or (quoting garage) a concentric slave??

They are the two separate bits of a hyraulic system. You push the master cylinder's piston in with you foot, the fluid in it moves along the pipe work and push the slave cylinder part of the concentric slave/thrust out and against the diapragm/springs which disengages the cltch drive plate from the flywheel.

If the thrust bearing isn't moving, it could be either master or slave at fault ie master isn't talking or the slave isn't doing as its told!  ;)  ;)  ;)

Sorted...master cylinder in the end, put it in myself, easy enough job as it turns out...2 weeks later...oil pump gave up on the way down south...stopped the car and its been sat in Surrey since!!
