My partners just bought herself a very nice Astra Mk5 SRi with low millage, and it's a very nice car. Though where's the engine temp gauge ?.
However, we're a bit confused as I've also gone through the owners manual, and we can't seam to find any info regarding engine temp gauge ?. There doesn't seam to be an 'clock' gauge in the instrument pods, and can't seam to find anything in the digital info centre either ?.
Question is, you have to check the oil level with the engine at normal operating temp for it to read right on the engine dipstick (?), but how the hell do you know when it's at normal operating temp without driving around for 20-30mins just to check the level ?.
Anyone out there have any answers please ?.
Thanks in advance.

Why want you want to check your oil after it has just been running? Also the temp gauge is water temp not oil temp

Various cars these days have a very limited number of instruments. The Smart of SWMBO only has an engine temp gauge if you have the 'pods' in the middle of the dash top. Not all cars gave them SWMBO's included.

Yep, no engine temp gauge although you can get it in diag mode on the centre screen.
You cna check the oil when cold, the difference will be well within the accuracy of the dipstick

Thanks for that, least we'll know its going to be the same as cold, as didn't want to assume it would be the same cold, as warm in case the level was going to be out quite a bit - cheers MarksDTM.

If you want to see engine temp then press and hold the settings button on the radio until it bleeps, then press the BC button to view the test modes, press the BC button a few more times to scroll through the info and one page (think its the 3rd or 4th) has the engine coolant temp on it.
All info is displayed on the MID.
You cna also buy a dongle that plugs into the diag port and does a few extra features (e.g. auto locking) but, also displays the coolant temp in the trip diplay.

Thanks for the info Mark. Where can I get one of these dongle things from, and what do you mean by auto locking ?. are you refering to the fact you can get the coolant temp to remain in the trip display all the time ?.
I'll try the radio setting trick in the next few days.
Thanks once again.
